    From Real-time:

    "Top Social Traffic:
    Source    Active Visitors
    1.    HubPages    1

    Apparently Google thinks so...

True? False? Good? Bad? Relevant? What say you?

Hardly surprising given we are tarred with that abominable "Ning Glam Social" logo everywhere on the site. It makes me squirm whenever I see it. The name is redolent of moronic uneducated women yammering on to each other about mascara and handbags while leafing through a Mills and Boone before picking up their brats from school.

Ever since that label appeared, I have been too ashamed to tell anyone that I have content here.

I'm with you.  I don't like that stupid logo showing on my hubs.

If i try to log on to hubpages from my work computer the site is blocked under the category 'Social Networking Sites'. So at least some consider it such.

Ya know... Now this is serious. HP probably averages several million views a day from people at work. Or used to? Leastwise, that's always kind of been my general feeling. If all the IT shops start thinking of HP as another FB, that is not good at all...

I just did a search for "list of social sites". I checked half-a-dozen results.

The good news... HP didn't show up anywhere.

The bad news... NING sure did!

What does this mean for us?  Can our writing be taken seriously on a social network site?  Is it even worth using it on a CV or as examples of internet publishing, if it's in the same league as face book?

      Can we be taken seriously?

Visit the religious and political forums and then just see if you can ask the same question with a straight face! lol

HP should flat out ask Google if the R/P forums have a negative effect on this site's overall rating.

In theory each subdomain stands alone on it's own merits.  I'm not real sure how true that is, though...

I'm of the fairly firm belief that both play a factor.

I would be very interested to know if Squidoo, etc. are also classified as social sites by Google. If so, then at least we have a somewhat level playing field. If not, then I consider this pretty serious.

Hey, Squidoo folks! Could you tell us what Real-time says about Squidoo?

I don't even mention Hub Pages in applications since I was told this was only a "blogging" site! That was a year ago. You would think we would be told, however, that the quality of the site is not one that is going to help us make money for producing content!

There is something wrong with that.

However....how do we explain that there certainly ARE hubbers who make good money writing here.  In fact, some make excellent money...as in, "supporting their family money."  That's not possible on a strictly social network.

      1. IzzyM profile image87
IzzyMposted 11 years agoin reply to this

The only hubbers who are making enough money to support their family on HP now are almost certainly not living in America. A dollar goes a long way in many third world countries.

Earnings have fallen drastically per 1000 views since HP ads was introduced, IMO.

This whole 'social networking' stuff should not be associated with a writer's site (again IMO). Those hubbers who pointed out that their work offices ban all social networking sites have made an excellent point.

Judging from the time of day I used to get most of my hits, those were USA office hours. We shouldn't be surprised that traffic has fallen.

Still, look on the bright side, perhaps more businesses will have office workers actually working, and not writing or reading hubs. This should lead to the return of a profitable economy, meaning that people no longer have to 'work from home' writing web content that has already been written umpteen million times.

It makes it all seem a bit redundant.  Why bother producing anything of quality if it's just considered a blog?  Why not just blog?  Or even better, go off and do some proper writing.  Makes ya think tongue

OK! Looks like we are not being picked on versus the other sites. Leastwise, not as to the social thing.

And of all the writing sites Google could pick to mention, they mention only HP and Squidoo. And I think Google is finally figuring out that Squidoo is a link farm...

They have a paragraph about Squidoo and all they say about HubPages is that it is similar to Squidoo.

Yep, they also say Twitter is the new kid on the block. I looked for a date, but couldn't find one. I suspect that page is very old. But everything, everywhere seems to indicate that HP and S are both classified the same.

To me a very interesting side note, re: Real-time.

Hubpages.com is classed as Social Traffic, but HP subdomains are classified as Referral Traffic. And Real-time does not do subdomains for FB, Twitter, etc.; leastwise I haven't seen one yet.
