I thought this was beautiful and sad.

The wife was Catholic, the husband was Protestant.
Because of their different religious beliefs they were not allowed to be buried in the same cemetery, so they did this instead.

That is just so ridiculous it's sad. Religion certainly does breed intolerance.

You don't, that's what your religion teaches you and that's why it's rejected as garbage. smile

I think you're pretty hateful tbh, yet I joke with you and abstain from reporting you on a daily basis. If you were able to communicate on any other level other than intolerance, I would be able to find a common ground and see something good in you, but all I have seen is hatred. Give me something to work with.

Actually, you are the one showing hatred, not me. I attempt to stick to the subject while you only stick to insulting people personally and telling lies. That's all you do here.

Yes, we're like the Odd Couple. You can hear the announcers voice, "Can two such opposites share a thread together, without driving each other crazy?"

Perhaps in their death, these two have left a lasting message to the ridiculousness of man's intolerance. It should be a reminder that love conquers all. I feel quite sure that they are having the last laugh as they spend ETERNITY very much together.

Why strangers? That is one take. But, not necessarily the correct one. They wouldn't be strangers, buried so close. It appears to me they are shown as neighbors. Burying the hatchet. I think it can be seen as a beautiful gesture of all past conflicts are forgotten after death.

I agree with that, Rad Man.  Although to be honest, I think a decision to be buried in a municipal (secular) cemetery together would have been an even better decision.

I gave a lot of thought to this before replying because my husband and I are in a mixed Christian marriage.  I'm Catholic, he's an Evangelical Protestant.  I can't imagine that this couple lived in the States, though, because most Protestant churches here would allow a Catholic to be buried in their cemeteries as long as that person had been a faithful member of the Protestant congregation.

In the end, though, if we were forced to choose, I'd choose a municipal cemetery.

I'd like to be cremated. After I die of course.

I agree. I've left my wishes to be cremated when I pass (after they donate what can still be used). Strike a match to the rest and be done with it

The only problem I have with cremation is the energy is wasted in unused heat, however it's better than wasting land.

No. A handshake and a kiss,.in this context, denote the same thing. A kiss can  mean more than a handshake. Many things a kiss means don't drive home the same point.

It's just a symbol. A kiss displays love while a handshake displays both parties are unarmed. But I guess it doesn't matter to me anyway.

If I die and find out we all have to kiss in the afterlife, you'd have a hard time convincing me I wasn't in hell.

If you can't tell, I'm very excited. Do tell how you found out what no one else can know for sure.

God doesn.t see the religion of someone he sees the person, what you were or how you were.
Funerals are for the living, graves are for the living to have somewhere to go for remebernce or whatever other reason.
Whatever you believe they have been reunited in death, whether they are buried next to each other or at each end of the earth.

Just so's you know, I didn't write that blurb about the cath./prot. couple. It was something off FB.
Personally, once your dead, I don't really believe you go on being a couple. In my mind, that was a statement they left behind for the world and a declaration of love. Very sweet.

Sad that they let their religious beliefs separate them in the end. Couldn't they find a cemetery they could both be buried in?

Good question! I assumed it was many many years ago... I pictured some tiny village in Ire or Eng and maybe that was the only choice, prot. or cath. I don't know, but it's a very loving tribute.
