I have a hub that was not featured due to problems with quality. How do we know what the quality issue is? I read the rating chart and didn't seem to find anything wrong with the hub in question.

      Hi Mandy,
I took a look at your Hub and enjoyed reading it!  It's on the edge of being Featured or not.  This is why we recommend that you shoot for an 8 on the rating scale so that there isn't any way that it could not pass the QAP.  Have you taken a look at our Learning Center Hub on improving the quality of a Hub

I recommend adding more media, a table (perhaps giving examples of ways that you can honor those that have served our country), a poll, more photos, etc.  I would also recommend either removing or reducing the products in the eBay capsule; there are two of the same product shown. You have written a very thoughtful Hub that with a bit more info should be Featured!  smile

One of the biggest issues I've had is focus.  Always make sure that within your hub you do not stray off topic...this is easy to do and damages the value of your work.

Your are right. The HP can highlight us on what count the quality is suffering, so that we can repair that portion. I still strongly feel that when a hub is shifted to non featured section, they need to inform us on what such and such aspects this hub is lagging or what further step one can take to address this problem.

You are assuming HubPages is a big company with a large staff who have the time to give advice to each Hubber individually.   In fact they are a very small company, and they are trying to assess hundreds of Hubs.

There are some fundamentals which are essential for a good Hub.  One of them is good English, because most of the visitors to HubPages are native English speakers and they won't read a Hub that has poor grammar or is hard to understand.

Looking at a couple of your Hubs, it's clear that your English is not quite up to the required standard.  Although you have done well in some other aspects of Hub writing, that doesn't make up for the level of English, I'm afraid.

I am non native English speaker and as such has its own problems.  Anyhow trying hard to improve and polish. But with this level of standard I got nearly 40000 hits and a couple of Accolades too.  I have confidence and I will conquer my goals. No one can block me.  May I remind you that WINNERS NEVER QUIT AND QUITTERS NEVER WIN. Thanks for your harsh but eye opening comments.

Excellent Suni.  you keep on polishing your English.  It is the hardest language to learn and even some Americans' can't write or speak English.  You are doing good.  The more you practice the better you will get at it.  Keep on my friend!  Be a Winner and not a quitter that's the only way to get through life.

Perhaps you can find a native English speaker to help you with your hubs.
Reading the edits of your hubs would also help you learn the language, as you would be able to make a side-by-side comparison between your original text and the edited version.

I don't have much problem as you think. Please look at my author score. Today it has touched the every best level of 96. I am confident and happy.  But some people at times makes harsh comments, which really hurts. But you are there to help me and I am happy.  Please suggest me the way to get that EDIT service. I wish to learn more about it. Hope you will respond.

I do not think there is such a service. I was suggesting that you find someone who is interested in the things that you are to exchange ideas and help each other with writing style and an easier flowing writing style for English readers.

Not meant to be harsh, just honest.  It is not fair for people to encourage you just to be nice, because that would be misleading you.

HubPages is a place where you write to make money - in other words, you're working as a writer.  Therefore before you even start your job on HubPages, you need to have basic English writing skills already.

You wouldn't take a job as a trainee accountant if you didn't already have a good understanding of numbers, would you?   HubPages is similar:  you'll find plenty of opportunities to learn and develop all  the other skills, but you need that fundamental skill of writing English first (because there is no English language tuition available here).

Although I've studied French, Russian and Spanish, I wouldn't dare try writing on a French, Spanish or Russian language site - my skills are good enough to get compliments in conversation, but I know they're not good enough to write articles.  I'd say your English is about the same.

If that is the case how can I gain a total author score of 97?  I am a non native English user, naturally, I have my own style.  Also, if my style was such trouble some or bad how out of my 61 hubs 57 got featured.  After all, it is for HP,  we are writing.  Here no Master degree in English is required. After all we are not writing for The New York Times or BBC.  Here simple but error proof writing is ok.  I am sure, I cannot reach the level of a native speaker like you but still hope  I can do some decent work here.  In fact what lacked in your first comment was a kind of decency and your total expression is not in tune with the HP culture of love and cooperation.  You can get that feel from the  several posts I got here on my Forum on the very topic.  We need to  concern about the feel of fellow hubbers. You can criticize but do it in plain  or decent way.  I was really upset  on your comments. Anyhow let's forget it all.  We stand here for a good cause and not for fighting.  LOVE IS THE LANGUAGE EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS!  I forget and forgive all bad experience !

Hi Suni.....you will find that even though HP is available in several different countries and promotes this that some of the long time hubbers are upset over non native English speaking writers as they feel it lowers their own hub score.

Take it all in stride my friend.  I have had many rude responses to simple questions and I get so frustrated that so called professional adults can be so mean in character.  Let it roll off like water on a ducks back.

The more you practice your English and the more you write the better you get at it.  I personally enjoy reading your hubs.  Peace to you and your family

I agree.  I've been having issues with published and nonpublished then the next day they are published again.  I went through all the unpublished ones and tweeked them, changing the title, making sure they were in the correct category and adding different pics and polls.  That seemed to work as they have all been republished and have been for several days.  Make sure you view the box in the upper right hand corner when you are editing and watch for all the check marks.  The more check marks you have the more you hub will be 'evergreen'.

Hi rmcmillen!  The Hub that you are referencing I think has more of a blog post style than a Hub.  Please take a look at the links that I provided in the first post and see if you can fix it up. If your goal is to have this Hub Featured, I would recommend changing your format; it seems to me that this is the biggest issue in this Hub.   Having large blocks of spacing, ellipses, and bolding throughout your Hub doesn't seem to score well in the QAP.  smile  If you haven't used the Topic Templates yet, they are a great foundation for new Hubs and provide a lot of useful tips that will help you pass the QAP and gain readership.  Good luck!

That's ok, I have a hub that keeps getting featured and unfeatured the next day.  Then it gets featured again.  I'm going to rewrite it anyway but geez wiz.  I'm scared to look at my account on a daily basis.

It would be helpful if hubs that fail QAP automatically displayed the scale they scored lowest on.  That would provide some guidance.

Good thought - that would certainly help.  We don't even need a number, just the general area the hub is weak in.

sorry to interrupt... How do i know the rating scale of my hubs? Where do I find them?

    1. Robin profile image86
Robinposted 10 years agoin reply to this

We don't show you the ratings on your Hubs.  We recommend shooting for an 8 on the rating scale to ensure that your Hub is Featured; although, Hubs don't need to be as high as an 8 to be Featured.  smile
