RESOLVED: Unfeatured then Featured

   A couple days ago one of my lenses/hubs went unfeatured. Okay, no biggie. An article with the title of My 70s Bookshelf is probably not much in demand. I planned to move it to my personal website in progress.
   
   Then in the last hour it's suddenly showing as featured again. What? Is it even possible?

      It doesn't happen very often, but if you've shared links somewhere (e.g. on Facebook) and that has generated a sudden flurry of visits, that could be enough traffic to bring it back.

      Hello Lion,
      I had a couple of hubs go unfeatured recently due to engagement. A little editing, new photos and replacing some of the product capsules seemed to get it back in business. Sometimes a title change might help too. I'm realizing that many of my titles would not enhance the reader to open the article so I'm working on those before they get the dreaded half moon circle of doom.

   It is possible for content to fluctuate between states. 
   
   It may not be related, but last night we had a bug that re featured content that wasn't intended to be featured.  We are working on a fix now.  Hopefully it will be deployed today.

   Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions. it was my "70s Bookshelf" hub. Yet another brilliant (cough) suggestion for an article by those masters of media back at Squidoo. I still stand behind the writing, but it wasn't something I'd have created if not for the Rocket Squid prompts.
   
   Yep, not exactly a title that'll be searched for or found in the search engines. If it goes dead I'll eventually cannibalize it for my website in progress, I suppose.

      lionrhod, I've noticed the same thing over the past few days. Right now, I'm in the process of removing everything HP doesn't want and putting it on a blog. I figure it really can't do any worse there, and may do better. I had 353 lenses when I started on HP. Tonight I was down to 318, and I just deleted 3 more of them. I don't believe I'm that bad of a writer, and I think my words will sell elsewhere. So I'm packing up, little by little, and moving out. I will probably take all of them eventually. I've made nothing here since I moved, but then I get no promotion here either, no matter what I do on my own. So, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. It's too bad, because I really thought HP would be a good place to write. I now see that's so, but only for certain people, not ex-squids. If I sound bitter, yes, I am. I'm a good, professional writer and I know it, and in my opinion, I should be paid for it.

         I deleted one today for similar reasons, after I moved it to a blog. However, I have no plans on moving any of the pages that stay featured.

         @Nancy In the past sixty days, many hubs have tanked, so you are not alone. You might give it a few months to see if traffic returns. The Panda thing hit soon after Squidoo folks came, so it is difficult to figure what happened. I used to have good views in medical hubs, but Google wants you to be a real expert. Many newspaper and magazine writers are not experts but have some knowledge and good research and interview capability. I have a background in medical social work. We just keep writing and hoping traffic will be better. Good luck.

            brakel2, hello and thanks for your encouragement. I'm still working to move as many hubs as I can to my blogs. I'm not sure HP is the right place for me since obviously my hubs aren't getting views. And I'm not completely sure it's the "Panda" thing. I've been here since September, and have noticed a definite downward trend in views ever since then. I'm going to move only the ones that are poorly rated by HP first, and hopefully, by then we'll see how the remainder are doing. Those will determine whether I stay or go. Thanks again, for your upbeat comment, I DO appreciate it.

         I'm curious, what do you mean by "I get no promotion here either"?  I didn't think Squidoo did any promotion.
         
         If you mean promotion within HubPages (or within Squidoo) then that's irrelevant because our internal audience is very small.

   Since my website software is down atm (long story) and because I need to buy a new domain name (mine lapsed ) I'm waiting before moving anything off HP.
   
   It's a book review (or several) so I don't mind having it on my writing website, but it's not a priority.
   
   Sorry to hear you're disappointed with HP.
   
   I've already made more since Sept than I did starting in Feb back on Squidoo, but since that wasn't enough to buy a 6-pack, I'm not exactly rolling in dough.
   
   I'll give it a bit of time and hope things pick up - and hopefully publishing more hubs will help with that too.

   Don't go by the rating. Go by the number of hits you get. I have one that is my second highest visited hub, and they have it rated at 72 which is below 30 other hubs, some of which are hardly ever viewed.
   
   As far as earning, I have made significantly more here than I ever did on Squidoo, not quite enough to get rich on, but at least better than it was.
   
   I had 3 unfeatured the other day for the first time, but they are ones that have historically been poorly viewed. I did change the category on the one to something that should be more productive. I anxious to see if that makes a difference.

      Hi Judy, maybe I didn't state it clearly. I made good money on Squidoo and I am not making enough to fill my gas tank here on HP. I see no need to leave pages that are not featured, since no one gets to see them, and they earn nothing. So I'm moving those first, and eventually everything I have here will be moved. HP is a nice place, but I guess it's not right for me.

         I haven't been happy about being un-featured, but it does make me take a look at a hub and see if there is something that would improve it. I just had another one un-featured and did make some change. The one thing I did discover was that it was only in the food and cooking category but didn't any further break down from there.It was rated 70 before the changes and 80 after. The key to it is whether I get more visitors with the changes. It will be interesting to follow it's progress.
