It is definitely possible to earn extra income by selling stock photos.I am doing it myself. The new trend is called microstock photography. This is internet based stock photo agencies that pay the photographer a small commission on the use of their images. It is definitely a growing trend with the top agencies having thousands of photographers and millions of images on file. This is commercial stock photography,no pretty sunsets and landscapes or snapshots of the family picnic.Although the commissions seem quite low, anywhere from 25 cents to a few dollars, you still must know your stuff,ie.lighting, exposure and composition. The best way to learn more is to visit some of the sites and read their guidelines and photo needs.Search their best sellers and most popular images. Some of these microstock agencies include shutterstock, istock, fotolia, dreamstime and bigstock photo. They all differ in what they accept and commissions paid.

Don't forget in micro stock you need to submit a large number of images as well, to help offset the small payout.

Yes.  Microstock photography!!! It takes a while to make it worthwhile and to pay substantial commissions.  But if you approach it from a "hobby" standpoint, and something that you "already" enjoy doing....you can make it worth your while.

The potential is there, but you need to upload few hundred photos or thousand to see the results.

The same applies with writing a hubpages.

Uploaded about 30 pictures to BigStockPhoto and manage to get some sales.

About 50 - 60 % of my photos that I have uploaded were rejected because of poor quality .

    Read my experience below.

    Good Luck .

I need to get a better camera !

I agree with probyte2u, there is still potential in this avenue for making money. I do think you need to have enough photos to really flood out the market. I also think you need to perform some research on the kinds of photos people are purchasing and downloading most. You can probably find this out by researching some of the more popular stock photo portals.

A few other things to consider. You probably need to have some of the best quality equipment out there so that your photos are high quality enough for people to want to purchase. You also need to make sure you can offer files that are as large as allowed.

And don't forget, if you're moving toward this industry there are also other options you can explore. You can provide photography for greeting cards and products (think Zazzle or Cafepress) or sell prints through portals like Smug Mug or Deviant Art. Take some time to explore all of your options. I think you could probably do a few of these and make some nice side income.

You’ve got the latest and greatest camera, you take great photos, and now you want to take the next step and get paid for your creativity and work.  The easiest entry into selling your photos is via Microstock. Jim DeLillo will take you through the actions necessary to get your photos accepted and start selling on sites like iStock, Dreamstime, and Shutterstock.

Following his instruction you can be well on your way to seeing your photos online, credited, and ultimately sold and downloaded within days!
