Why is polygamy accepted in Islam?

Polygamy was considered normal in the Middle East when Mohammad lived. He made a rule that a man could only as many wives as he could support, including any children that came out of the marriages. So he improved the situation. The result is that while polygamy is accepted in Islam, it is not in fact very common.

Anyhow, I don't really understand why people should be forbidden to marry several people. As long as everybody, including the previous wife (or wives) is OK with getting someone new in the family, what's the big deal? I think it's better than having people have a mistress on the side who doesn't have any legal rights whatsoever, even if she gets children off the man.

Islam regulated this practice, made it more humane, and instituted equal rights and status for all wives. Polygamy is discouraged unless necessity for it exists. It is also evident that the general rule in Islam is monogamy and not polygamy. Only very tiny percentage of Muslims practice polygamy over the world.

Islam is straight-forward in dealing with practical problems. Rather than requiring hypocritical and superficial compliance, Islam goes deeper into the issues of individuals and societies, and provides for legitimate and practical solutions which are far more beneficial than would be the case if they were ignored. :-)

    Wallahu A'lam Bissawab.

Men have a tendency to not to be satisfied with just one wife. To avoid into getting unlawful relationships with other women, Islam permits men to take more than 1 wife. However this does not mean that men can take as many as he pleased. God stated in the Quran that a man take take up to a maximum of 4 wives at a time. On top of that God gave conditions for the man to be fair and do justice to all his wives, and if he can't commit that fairness then he should stick to one only.

    Reference:
    Surah An-Nisa(Chapter Women) 4:3
And if ye fear that ye will not deal fairly by the orphans, marry of the women, who seem good to you, two or three or four; and if ye fear that ye cannot do justice (to so many) then one (only) or (the captives) that your right hands possess. Thus it is more likely that ye will not do injustice.

The primary sex ratio of males to females is approximately 50/50 at conception,. As soon as men start marrying women of the same age as men, then polygamy will create a huge shortage of girls which will not be acceptable by God and Islam may be forced to do away with polygamy.

Hi!There are several reasons for this. The most important of them is the increase in proportion of women with the passage of time. Demographic surveys have proved that in the coming years, every country of the world will be overloaded with women. Polygamy is to keep maximum number of women within the routine social fabric. Secondly, Medical science says that hormones responsible for sexual desire are twenty percent more secreted in males than females. Implies that a male has same level of hormones after three to four days of previous intercourse. While females are different in behaviour. Some have the same desire after one month and some after many months. In case of pregnancy, a muslim mother cannot fulfill desire of his husband for almost three years. She has to deliver the child, feed him for two years and to take care of him, all day and night. From medical point of view, her body cannot afford frequent sex in such circumstances.Male sex hormones create aggression, if this aggression is not soothed thruough proper channel, it starts finding other outlets. Males become irritant and aggressive and less pateint in matters of every day life. This creates problems , sometimes leading to separation. However, there are strict rules to observe polygamy. Husbands have to treat all wives equally in all routine matters. If they fail to do so, they will have to face severe punishment here and hereafter. Polygamy, if observed following the theme behind it, is the only solution to get rid of sex marktes and exploitation centres.

i am a Muslim i shall find out why polygamy is accepted in Islam. but in my view polygamy reduces prostitution and every wife is equally treated and respected. so it is a good thing.see it is such a good thing that it reduces sexually transmitted diseases also and women have such a harsh life in prostitution, instead they can marry and lead a life with a man who can provide them with food ,shelter and protection.

    Its Natural ...

In that sex, is not only for pleasure ... Marriage seals the bond between humans, and the child conceived in matrimony, has Rights, in the legacy of his or her Parents.

Polygamy, helps all men and women getting married, and the Child, from being born a dumpster baby.
