Who is the most Talented Musician? example: Drums, Guitar, Base, Keyboards....
You can like a band because they Rock, or they're smooth...but it doesn't mean that the musicians are all that TALENTED....there are many musicians thru out modern music history (1930's till now?) that may not be on the top 40 list of bands but are top 10 of musicians....what's your thoughts?
It is down to taste and a very difficult question though my personal favourites are very varied...Drums: Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, John Bonham, John Mylett and Billy Cobham. Bass: Jack Bruce, Mark King, John Entwistle and Keith Mulholland. Guitar: Jimi Hendrix, Steve Vai, Steve Morris, Ritchie Blackmore, George Harrison and Bert Weedon. Vocalist john Lennon, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Ian Gillan, Billie Holiday, Gloria Estefan and Karen Carpenter. Keyboards: Jon Lord, Jools Holland, Kenny Newton and Jerry Lee Lewis.
Every instrument you mention can be played to a virtuoso standard. Tobol has answered this well but you can't mention bass players without mentioning Jaco Pastorius, so I couldn't resist chipping in.
Mr. Chapman has a point, I'd like to fine tune it a little by stating that you can't talk about bass players without mentioning Mr. Stanley Clarke. He did after all win Bass Guitar Magazine Best Bass Player of the Year for 10 consecutive years, forcing BGM to "retire" him from the competition since he had, in their words "made his point."
More generally I agree with Tobol that it's really a matter of taste. When it comes to vocals you have to talk Luther Vandross and Marvin Gaye or the discussion lacks credibility. You're right RP, Jaco was that "thang."
Regards
Yup, its true that most of the really talented musicians aren't that well known because they were not in a particular band. There are exceptions like Flea (bass) of the Chilli Peppers or Dave Grohl (drums) of Foo Fighters and Nirvana. Plus as Tobol says these lists are all down to taste. I think the most talented musicians don't always make it into lists because they play purely for the joy of playing, rather than for fame. Here are some of my personal favourites - Skip James (guitar); Tom Waits (vocals); Ray Manzarek (keyboards); Danny Thompson (bass); Dave Grohl (drums). Sounds like my ideal supergroup!
Keyboard is the best. Especially, higher quality.
Nowadays there are so many possibilities because of technologies. But it depends where you want to play. For chamber concert not recommended. If you are a good musician, you can learn any instrument to play.
That's an easy question for me to answer:
Dionysos (USA Band) a local So Cal band rocking the IE
Graham Boostrom on Lead Guitar
Ray Delgado on Bass Guitar
and of course, my absolute favorite
Zak McAdamis on Drums
Of course I'm bias...they are personal friends of mine and I love spreading their music everywhere that I go
Vocalist : Jon Anderson (YES) and Sting (The Police)
Guitarist: Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin)
Bassist: Cliff Burton (Metallica) and Geddy Lee (Rush)
Keyboardist: Kevin Moore (ex. Dream Theater, OSI)
Drummer: John "Bonzo" Bonham (Led Zeppelin) and Neil Peart (Rush)
Bass: Stanley Clarke (but Jaco Pastorius is worth a close second)
Drums: Mike Portnoy or Neil Peart
Keyboards: Keith Emerson or Chick Corea
Guitar: Django Reinhardt. The guy only had two fingers to work with. The other two were badly burned, and the nerves damaged so that he could hardly move them. He could only use his pinky and ring finger for chords. But if you listen to his music... Wow. With two fingers he puts to shame most fully-endowed players.
Geoff Tate (Queensryche) for best vocals, Steve Harris (Iron Maiden) for best bassist, Glenn Tipton (Judas Priest) for Guitar, Dennis De Young (Styx) for Keyboards, and Neil Peart (Rush) for Drums.

For those who agree with me: where have all the talented musicians gone!?It seems as though music is getting worse as time goes on... What explanation(s) is(are) there for this depressing talent-drought in the music industry?

The Greatest Most Talented Musician In America - who is it?I make no bones here - "American 'Idle'" is the most pathetic joke imaginable....no talent to speak of on that show, and that is exactly it's point.I think Mark O'Connor is the finest musician in the history of the USA,...
