   What exactly is back linking?
   
   As a new publisher here on hub pages, I see people often mentioning back linking their hubs. Could you explain the basic concept of back linking for me? Thanks all!

   Backlinking -> getting links to your site. Lets say you have a site which sells flower-pots. You get a link to your site from a forum, blog, social network, etc etc, which has SOME relation to flowers etc.
   
   So it is linking content related sites together.
   
   I have a page for punching bags therefore I will write an article on the subject of using punching bags for a workout, and link that article to my page. Thats a backlink. You need a lot of them is the competition for your keyword is high.

   in layman's language it means other sites having link of your hub/site.. back linking is very important aspect for page ranks...the more number of website have links of your hub/site , the more possibility your site has to have good rank..but their is word of caution in that..ppl tend to buy backlinks but if you have good content and good site provide you backlink , its best thing to happen...

   Yes the other two comment are correct.  Google will give your web presence better organic results if the other sites linking to you are of high quality and high traffic.  For example, if eBay had a link on its site to yours, and you didn't have a link on your site to eBay - this would weight huge in the eyes of the search engines.  Google then assumes that eBay found your site so important as to send their users there.  Google further assumes that your site must be of importance and therefore ranks your page better.  On the other hand a bad low quality site linking to you does you no good.  So get good backlinks - it helps not only to get a better page rank, but to stay there.
