Best Bedtime for a 1st grader?

My girl never seems to have adequate sleep.  When should I put her down and wake her up?

Well, I think all children are different. When is first grade? Is that age 4/5? We call that reception...or Year One is the year after. My son used to go to bed at 8.30, and then get up at 7.30, so got 11 hours sleep. Though that it is later than many parents I know, whose children were in bed by 7 - some of them got up at 6 am, though, so it's all swings and roundabouts. If she has only just started school, it may just be that the day exhausts her. Many children find it hard. Even if she has been in nursery, the day is more mentally tiring at school, I think.

My son is in first grade, starting second grade this fall. I have him in bed at 9 pm and he gets up at 6:30 am. He seems to get enough sleep. On weekends we try to sleep in depending on the plans for the day. Sometimes we even catch a nap. Most of the time he is up before me. So it really depends on the child. Iwould say for you to try putting her to bed early like around 8 pm or so and adjust it according to how tired she is in the evening. Thats what I did. He sleeps good now.

My 6 year old daughter requires a lot of sleep. She will go to bed at 8:30 fall asleep around 9 or 9:30 and if I let her sleep in she can sleep for a good 12 hours, usually its 11.

I've heard that nine to eleven hours is the recommended amount of daily sleep for small children, more the younger they are.
