Through advertising revenue. When so many millions of people are on the social media site, Advertisers pay a lot of money to have their adverts placed in front of such a large audience.

Facebook allows anyone who has a group set up to place there own ad within facebook.

When you place the ad you pay a fee to facebook.

Now calculate the number of groups on there with the rate facebook charge for the advert (which is cheaper than Adsense by google)....you will see Facebook make a lot of money..

So by placing a ad via a facebook group or page...its a WIN/WIN situation...you can make money and Facebook does make money.

Facebook has started making money by advertisements. It has millions of users and you can create a page for your business or product.
When you sign up to promote it, you can set region, cost, age group etc parameters and it gets noticed by large number of viewers.
Facebook charges you for that, that is how they are making money.
Facebook latest moves to 'Like it' and Open Graph initiatives are expected to be big spinners.

Facebook now is the number one site in terms of daily visits. So therefore it is not surprising that many businessmen will advertise in the site. It is therefore the source of income of Facebook.
