I have a Motorola Cliq by T-Mobile which runs on an android platform and I really like it. It is a touchscreen model and you can download endless applications from the android market. It is suppose to compare to the i-phone in which I have never owned but I really enjoy this phone. Hopefully that answered your question
I have the HTC Desire. It is an excellent phone, and in my opinion is as good as a iPhone 4 in ways. The decision for me to go for the Desire was that I refused to take out a mortgage to fund Apple's latest creation.
In all seriousness it is a very good phone, and I am more than happy with the Android software. The one downside is the Android Market is not as well populated with apps like the Appstore, and there is many apps that are of less than desired quality.
The Android platform is a strong competitor in the phone market now, and is well supported.
The main alternative is Apple, and as a previouse owner of the iPhone 3G. I can honestly say they are very good. The advantage would be they just work, and do everything they are designed to do well. All be it maybe a little restrictive at times.
If its a Android phone you want. The market has a huge variety, and please don't hesitate to contact me if you would like anymore help.
I also own the Motorola Cliq from T-Mobile. It is an absolutely awesome Android phone with thousands of available applications. I have never tried iPhone apps, so I have no way to compare their quality. However, most apps are pretty straightforward and unlike with the iPhone most apps made for Android are FREE.
Although the Apple iPhone may have more apps right now, due to it's earlier launch, Android-based phones are now outselling all versions of the iPhone, so it will only be a matter of time before Androids eventually surpass Apple in the number and quality of available applications.
About my only "complaint" regarding Android phones (which may be true of iPhones as well) is that not all applications behave as they should, and can occasionally cause your phone to "lock up". Solving the problem is simple. Just uninstall the app that is causing the problems and things will return to normal.
