A backlink is simply a link to your site.

It will benefit because a search engine will see the link as a 'vote' for your site from the site that has the link on it.

In its simplest from, the more 'votes' for your site that a search engine can find all around the internet, the higher the search engine will rank your site.

In reality things are much more complicated, as the popularity of the site that is 'voting', the wording of the link anchor text, meta data, the target page on your site and other factors all impact on exactly how each individual 'vote' is valued by the search engine.

    I hope this helps,

    T

I think a link to your article helps you in several ways. It links your article to the other articles helping drive the traffic to your article as well as the article you have linked to. A reader of your article can go to the article you have linked to. In other words you are directly helping some one else or yourself if you have linked to your own article somewhere else. Internet universe just like the larger universe follows the law of give and take. If you give something you get the rewards in return - directly or indirectly. I had a very low hubkarma. I was advised to link. I began linking all my hubs to the other hubs. Within a week my hubkarma has considerably improved. As for linking hubs, just click the link button, you will get choices of several hubs, click the hub that is most relevant to your hub and you are done. It's that simple. I hope that helps.

backlinks are when you go to other websites, blogs, social media and email and create a LINK BACK to your hub.  This is letting people know you have written something so hopefully they will go and read it.  This increases traffic to your site.  It benefits you in increased readership and income.
