What would the purpose be? To have people learn for the sake of learning? There is a lot to be said for that but you would have to have some way to determine whether people have earned their degree or not.
Regardless of the arbitrarity of age, age classification is a very natural and effective way of grouping students. Also, there are many provisions for an individual to transcend these grade restrictions.
Self-motivation is in short supply, generally speaking. If students fail to master material under a grading system, I doubt they would study and learn more without grades and the motivation they offer.
No way! Grades are measurable indicators of the student's intellectual aptitude. Grades are also further indicators of the student's motivational level and work ethic. Grades are legitimate methods of assessing intellectual aptitude and measuring mastery of a subject. College grades are reflections of how the corporate world is going to rate employees based upon their work performance. What better way to enforce and implement meritocracy than to grade students based upon their academic performance.

that is totally false. It is the A students who are the MOST SUCCESSFUL in life. They have more opportunities to further their education and to succeed than either B or C students. A students are more likely to attend graduate, law, and/or medical school than either B or C...
