What are your low cost vacation ideas?
So many people have debt issues these days and taking a vacation is thought to be a no-no. But we all need a break now and then regardless. Long term planning and saving can make a simple vacation a possibility.
I like weekend getaways. Local trips taken by car are great, low cost trips. Sometimes there are some great things to see and visit right within your own area.
I live in the midwest so I have a lot of opportunities for quick road trips.
Great question!
If you are fortunate to have plenty of vacation days along with a job where you don't have to give notice beyond a few days that you'll be using some time then one could sign up with http://www.travelzoo.com/
http://www.applevacations.com/
http://travelb.priceline.com/splash/hp/home.do?rdr=1
All three of these sites offer "last minute" deals.
Most of the Apple Vacations are for all inclusive resorts which include airfare, food, alcohol/drinks. Duration of the trips may be as little as 3 days and up to 12.
Travelzoo and Pricline also will send alerts for your local area or region. For example someone living in San Diego, CA (Southern California) may get an alert for special to fly up to San Francisco for a weekend along with a special hotel rate.
Lastly you act like a tourist in your own town or nearest large city to you. Check out http://www.citypass.com/ for deals on various tourist attractions, most likely there hotel specials.
You may sign up to recieve alerts from starwood hotels, Hyatt, Kimpton, and Marriott...etc. You could stay downtown, ride around in a double deck open air tour bus, or take a taxi to the various attractions, turn off your cell phone, avoid watching the news or reading a newspaper, eat at nice restaurants, dance, see a play, or take in a movie.
On Sunday have a leisurely champagne brunch before heading home. By the time it's all said and done you'll fell like you had a mini vacation!
Save on lodging costs by staying in hostels--many have private, hotel-style rooms that are about the same quality as the HoJo's for a fraction of the price. Another option would be to consider low-cost apartment rentals--you will save a TON on food by buying your own groceries and cooking your own meals, especially over the course of a longer vacation.
Look for free things to do, check out museum "free days," and plan on walking or taking public transit in large cities instead of cabs or renting a car.
Las Vegas has some incredible restaurants If you spend less on eating you can spend more in other areas of your vacation, shows, entertainment, drinks and gambling.
There are tons of discount travel sites that show you last minute deals or the most reasonable travel ideas and time of year to travel.
If you like cruises, you can search any month and any location on a few sites and have options listed lowest cost -highest.
I found a 12 day Med. Cruise today for May @ $649 per person.
Find a local spot to vacation to. A couple of hours away so it still has that travel feel to it. It can even be a one day trip!
