My cat is exactly the same.  In fact, he often sits on my laptop when I am trying my best to type.  I have to give up, and just turn off my laptop.

Cats like to be the centre of your attention...mine does it too

In your cat's eyes the laptop is probably another type of pet or cat.  Your cat is Jealous because you are giving the laptop more attention.

Jealousy! smile Your cat is vying for attention. When trying to push my laptop off my map doesn't work, Prince Fredward will actually pretend to love the computer and then rub himself all over it and purr. xD

It's like he's trying to say, "Look, Ma! I'm being a good kitty! Look at how well we get along!"

Mine, sits an the hand operating the mouse.  She gets mad if I try to type.  So, it is a cat thing.

My cat used to always lay on the newspaper when I was reading it every morning. He also would get on top of my hand when using the mouse at my desktop. I think he just wanted all of my attention.

Definitely for attention...my Chloe does the same thing.  After I give her some attention, she then moves from the laptop to the arm rest right beside me so that I can pay attention to her, while I'm on the laptop.

It has nothing to do with love or companionship. It's the mouse. Cats want mice!

Well, if your cat is a lion, he may be trying to watch the Lion King with you. Shrugs.

Technically, if you're always with your cat, except the time you use your laptop, it means that the cat is not happy with you using the laptop. Rather than that, in various cultures, cats have been said to be able to sense supernatural presences.  So maybe... just maybe...if there's a specific room for you to use your laptop... something lurks behind the scenes over there. XD just maybe.
