Did anyone really think the US wouldn't raise the debt ceiling?

it's not like they had a choice but I still see people acting like they were surprised, did you think they might not?

I agree, it's a show but it's irritating that they continue to show such poor leadership and governing

I think is crystal clear there's not a single politician in Washington who can find their own butt with both hands and a map. I had no doubt they would do it but, no, we didn't need to raise the debt ceiling. They just need to cut spending like we all have to.

No, everyone should have known that they would.  They are going to do what they want when they want.  They are just going to keep using scare tactics along the way.

I think we all had much more hope than was realistic. This same game has been played before: raise taxes and promise to cut spending over the next decade. Of course, the taxes will be raised, but the cuts will never take place, just as has happened several times in the past. I mean, do we really believe that the government needs that much money? I urge you to do some research and find ONE government entity that could not survive a 20% budget cut...you won't because they don't exist. And yes, I am even talking about DHS and the military.

Well, I was sure hoping they wouldn't. But surprised? Eh, nothing much surprises me out of DC these days.

Not surprised at all, it is stupid, as now they will bring the nation another 2.5 trillion further in debt on top of the over 14 trillion it already is. The country is ruined. No hope. The trust in the US is lost and many are taking their finances out.

There was a moment just for a little while that I had hoped that this was going to be the time when sanity prevailed. It was brief and for a short time there was hope in me. Then poof it was gone and I reminded myself that this is congress. A bunch of crooks. The sham continues.........

Nah, I knew they would do it, but I didn't know the deals that would get passed along with it.  I assumed it would be pretty lame though - and I was right!  Congress has raised the debt ceiling a few times with every presidency, so no surprise.  As Jon Stewart said, "it's a deal nobody can be proud of!"

No. It's been done over and over again with no fight. The only difference this time is the Tea Party. The Tea Party has no idea what the debt ceiling is about. It does NOT immediately raise our debt it just gave us the ability to pay our bills, which is something that we are not allowed to default on based on the Constitution. They needed to be able to make social security payments and to be able to pay federal employees including military personnel. Do we really want them to stop paying these things anyway? By the way, they did not get an agreement with raised taxes-just spending cuts. It is going to be yet another blow to the economy and more people out of work and being payed unemployment.

They had to raise the debt ceiling. They had to do this very routine operation. Previous to this... event, the debt ceiling had been raised ninety (90) times between 1941 and the present without any drama.

This time, the Tea Party-infused Republican Party decided to make it dramatic. This younger branch of Republicans that were just sent to Congress believed that they were sent with a mandate to basically take no prisonerd, to hold the line, to stay true to their "values," whatever those are.

With this latest roster of Republicans compromise (which had been the relative way of things decades past) was a dirty word this time around for Republicans.

But they must have known all along the debt ceiling would have to be raised. Not to raise ito would have meant the United States was defaulting on previous obligations. They would have had to "decide which bills to pay, and which bills not to pay," and all that.

Most important of all, from the perspective of the ruling class (this term 'ruling class' does not just mean the government proper), to default on the debt would have definitely spelled the beginning of the end of the American empire, and they certainly don't want that!
