What should I say when someone's dog is dying?
A family member's dog's health is deteriorating at 14 years, and we don't think she will live for long. What can I say to help?
P.S. -- thank you for all your helpful answers to my previous question!
Hi Mr. Grimwig....please tell your family member that the most loving thing to do is to comfort the doggie and, when the time comes to say goodbye, do so in as painless a way as possible. Euthanasia is so very difficult but, with the help of the Veterinarian who will guide you and tell you the truth, and the support of family, this most painful transition will be a tiny bit more able to be done. Most of all, give love, support, undestanding (because, those of us who love our companion animals feel very strongly at times such as this, and value our animals as we do our beloved family; just love and support and, be sure the dog does not suffer when it is certain the time has come. Remember, "The Dog's Prayer."
A dog can be just like a family member to some people so, you should consider giving your condolences to the family like you would if they had a love one dying.
Say that you are really sorry for their situation. Ask them what you can do to help them and if you ( and the people who's dog is dying) believe in prayer, tell them you will pray for them.
In 13 years, the best answer words of advice, came from a long time client. He stood before us, in the lobby of the clinic, in tears. He leans over the counter, places his hand in mind, and says: "The most loving thing I could ever do, is say farewell, best friend..you see, it is never goodbye." For years, I will carry his words of wisdom with me.
Its not so much what you can do to help but them knowing you are there for them if they need you. It's like when you lose a loved one. People can say sorry or give you their condolences but just being there for someone is the best thing you can do. Be a shoulder to cry on, a hand to hold or an ear to listen to them. Its never easy to lose someone or an animal that you or someone else has had for years. When they come to you, let them know that their dog knew how much they loved him/her and went knowing how much they were loved. I know this question was 2 months ago and it might not help now but they might still need you right now... hope this helps
Having personally went through this less than 2 months ago, I can feel their pain in my soul. This is such a tough life event. I would let them know that you are sorry for their loss and be sure to convince them that you are always here for them at any time of any day.
When my dog passed I had a coworker that brought me a plant with a butterfly decoration in the dirt. Butterflies are symbolic of change and a reminder that one does not stay in their original form forever. It represents transformation and growth which is essential to overcoming grief. I planted the flower and it brings me peace to watch it grow and blossom into another form. I would recommend this to anyone who is supporting a loved one through the loss of a pet and/or family member.
You don't need to say anything. Just be there for your loved one.
Dogs live around 17 years, people can live for 80 to 100 years.
Most people understand the math, but sometimes they need to be reminded.
I've lost several dogs and a few cats. It's hard.
Each person grieves in a different way. Just be there for them. It's what they really need.
