Banks not helping and now I am clueless. Go to another bank or lose it all?

The bank I am with right now is giving me so many problems for so long I can't stand it anymore. Someone stole my account information and used it to purchase stuff online, plus they hacked into my PayPal account to try and get money from my bank account to something else. I'm stuck owing $200 to the bank because they refuse to handle it and deny my disputes I give them. Now I know I can set up an account with another bank so maybe I can do that, but if I close my other account will I still owe them? The checks I have I need the money for my daughter's needs. Any suggestions?

I'd go to the Federal Trade Commission, Bureau of Consumer Affairs. You can file a complaint online at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/

Did you report your card missing quickly? Can you ask the Police fraud quad to take a look at your situation?

If you're interested in making more money I wrote some good articles.

It's not my card that is stolen actually it is just my numbers and info. I did file a complaint, but who knows when I will hear any word back, if at all. The police that are involved in the area are clueless, I know someone who had to do the same thing. I'm beyond at my wits end.

Unfortunately I had the same problem with PNC.  I had a similar problem with another bank too.  PNC refused to credit all of the fees.  They credited so many of them in one day but I wasn't able to close the account until all pending transactions were cleared.  They then got me for more fees over the whole mess the next day.  I went in there demanding they take the new fees off given the fact that somebody hacked into my account somehow and charged unauthorized charges.  They refused to credit me and told me I owed them all sorts of money.  I refused to pay it.  I couldn't close the account because it was in the negative from the whole mess.  It is not the best way to handle the situation but I got so fed up with them that I just let the account go and then they charged it off.  I do not recommend doing this as it can go against your credit.  I haven't seen it on my report but it may show up.
I would just tell them that you are disputing all of the charges and the transaction from Paypal, also let them know that you are in no way going to pay for fees that you should not be responsible for paying as they are disputed charges.  Also have you tried calling the headquarters for your bank? If the high ups get word of what is going on, they may step in or they may not.  It is worth a shot.  Tell them you will be reporting them if that is what it will take.

It's much harder to limit your liability if your transactions were on debit cards.  Credit cards have a mandated limited liability.  What you might try is documenting what you can and take the bank to small claims court.  If you've reported the cards or account numbers as stolen, you can probably get a judge to force the bank to waive their fees.

Small claims court doesn't require a lawyer and judges are used to regular persons trying to sort out their problems.  You will probably have to pay a small registration fee and have a friend serve a bank employee.  The bank will may figure it isn't worth sending one of their corporate lawyers to bicker over a few hundred dollars.  If they don't show, you automatically win.

I'd also call the three credit bureaus.  If you want to use credit in the future, those phone calls could save you a lot in improving your credit score and getting lower interest rates when you apply for loans or credit cards.

What an awful position to be in.  I would remain persistent with the bank until things start to work in your favor.  If you didn't make these transactions, there has got to be some type of protection for you.  Ask to speak with a manager, and then threaten to close your account if they can't help you. If all else fails, pay the $200 and get a new account.  In the future check your account daily because credit card fraud is on the rise. If you catch the charges while they're stilling pending, in  most cases the fraudulent charge can be cancelled, and the bank will simply cancel the card and send you a new one.  Best of luck to you in this situation.

What has happened to you is shocking. I would definitely be persistent with the bank and perhaps contact the banks head office or headquarters and contact higher management. They sound like they have been no help at all. If you pay money in, they will swallow it up in their charges. Have Paypal been able to help you with the hacking of your account. Personally I would visit the bank and demand to speak to someone in authority. I would also do what LiamBean says and contact the Federal Trade Commission. Good luck and I hope you get this sorted out soon.

Banks don't really care about customers who don't have tons of money. They have a tier system and when you get very wealthy (few million dollars) they will send people to you to help you. In fact, you won't ever need to visit the bank. It is unfortunate but it is true that most bankers like to hang around with people who have tons of money.
