   Could Grover Cleveland win today's Republican 2012 Presidential Nomination?
   
   I will ask this question with a past famous President or personage. I thought it might be interesting to see who knows their history or just their myth.

   I am not sure if he was Progressive enough.  Democrats are looking for a far leaning left no NONSENSE prez and proof of this are the low poll numbers Obama sees right now.  His constant caving to the GOTP is really pissing off his base.  Cleveland also pissed off the Railroad unions and as we see from WI where that will get you.  Thrown out on your ass.  Difference is he probably had to raise a few million maybe to win.  Now it takes almost a BILLION to win the White House.  If I was a betting man I would say NO.  If Obama had a supportive Congress today, he would win HANDS DOWN.

   Well, since he was a Democrat, I would say no. The income tax did not exist in those days, so that was not an issue. He was for limiting the sales tax on imports and imposing a 2% income tax on the top 10% richest Americans; neither of which endeared him to American industrialists. Not only would he have been against an inflationary currency with no backing, but he was against a silver-backed currency. He was a gold-standard man. That made the old conservatives happy. He was against American expansion, perpetual warfare, and imperialism because it was financially wasteful and immoral. He wanted limited government and was against most forms of welfare. He was also not an "office-seeker". He was an honest lawyer and people sought him out for public office. In the 21st-Century, Cleveland would be considered a "fringe" libertarian, similar to Ron Paul. He would not be nominated by either of the two major parties.

   Grover Cleveland would be right behind George Mason, could easily win the Republican 2012 Presidential nomination today, even though he was a Democrat.  That is the problem with labels, while President Cleveland was technically part of the Democratic party in the late 1800s, he was called a Bourbon Democrat; one who would make today's Bluedog Democrats look downright liberal.
   
   The Tea Party/Conservative playbook represent many of the ideas that President Cleveland practiced.
