   Well, dachshunds definitely have several breed specific health issues. I covered a few in my page, but there are certainly more. The main ones revolve around their physical stature. Since they are long and low to the ground it is very easy for them to get back problems. They are exacerbated with weight issues. If they jump from high places a lot, or fall down stairs or anything like that it will surely hurt them overtime. Things like that. They also are known to have many teeth problems, but that's really only if the hygiene in general is bad. There are some known eye problems as well, but I do not know much about that in particular.
   
   A quick question I have for you...
   Do you use this hubpages site as a means for any partial income? Do you do adsense or anything like that to make any money? Only asking because it looks like you've been around here for a while.

   As Mark is saying, indeed they mainly suffer from back problems due to their extreme abnormal anatomy or condrodystrophic breed and their very early in age spinal discs degeneration, which is different in nature too to the more normal degeneration in older dogs, leading in many cases, even without any special extra trauma, jump, etc., to slip discs, many times multiple.
   And also, as many minitiature breeds, very prone to obesity and dental disease.

   I am not a vet or a vet professional of any sort.  But, I have personally owned several mini-doxies and luckily, I have never had any issue with the pre-disposed condition of back problems.  With training and strict supervision of jumping and playing around, the dogs can be trained to not compromise their backs.  Example, my dogs, you can pick them up and place them in the bed.  They all three sleep with me every night.  However, none of them will jump off the bed in the morning.  I don't care if the door bell goes off one hundred times, they will not jump off the bed.  they will however, cry to let you know they want down from the bed to be on the floor to obviously bark their heads off at the door bell.  The other condition I find to be a said and very frustrating condition is the issue with skin and allergies, a condition that can cost a great deal of money to be on top of and diagnostically advanced in treating with dermatology vet visits(very expensive!!).  However, the trusting, loyal companions that these breeds are, it's worth every penny of the money spent because they truly are THE BEST DOG AND FRIEND ONE COULD EVER HAVE.  Thank you.

   As all know from my hubs about my dachshund, we love our dachshund very much. My dachshund has not shown any breed specific conditions as listed in the other comments posted. The reason for this is we make certain he eats Superfoods in his dry food, vitamins in his dog snacks and serve him every other day 1/8 cup of Almond Milk. This type of milk has more calcium in it than ordinary dairy products. Dachshunds require calcium in their diet to prevent hereditary dental and back issues. All who in person see my dachshund comment on how shiny his fur coat is as well as how fit and trim. They are not surprised when I admit to brushing his pearly white teeth regularly. All my neighbors admire how healthy my dog is, including our Vet. Dachshunds are one of the best breeds to enjoy one's life with and all breeds have their own set of health concerns to address. Each pet owner should ask their breeder, pet store or pet shelter about breed health concerns before purchasing a beloved one to ensure proper pet care and diet. Enjoy your pet!

   Dachshunds can have weak backs.  To be safe, try and not let your dog jump a lot.  Don't let him sleep on your bed, get him his own.  Plus, when they sleep on your bed they will jump off and it is usually a pretty high jump.
