I'm wanting to update a couple of my hubs, should I unpublish them first?
A couple have fairly good rankings in google, so if I unpublish them will I lose those rankings?
Keeping your Hubs fresh by updating once in a while helps towards increasing your ranking. Google likes fresh content. Ranking tents to diminish over time with stale content that is never updated. So you are on the right track to want to update your Hubs.
I advise not unpublishing first because you may experience a momentary drop in rank and it may take a longer time for Google to recognize that it is back after your republish it. So just update it without unpublishing.
There is an important thing to keep in mind. The way HubPages works, people will see your text in the present form, as you are involved in editing your text capsules. HubPages does an "auto save" every minute or so while you are in edit mode. This auto save actually makes it available to anyone who brings up your Hub in their browser while you are editing.
So my solution is to take the text and copy it into your own text editor (such as MS Word) and work on it off line. Get all the changes done that you want to do. Even spell check and grammar check it, Then, when you are all done, copy and paste the updated block of text back into the text capsule that you are updating. This way, your readers won't suddenly see a weird concoction of unfinished sentences.
Of course, the other solution is to unpublish while you are updating. But then you run into the problem with temporary lost ranking that I previously explained.
Yes they could become de-indexed or lose significant ranking depending on your timing and whilst you would probably eventually regain your standings when you republish you may lose traffic for a significant period of time. Unless you are doing a complete overhaul and changing your keywords and on page seo etc. i'd just edit them without unpublishing them just to be on the safe side. When you are happy with your updates then you could also ping each of your edited hubs to speed up how quickly the search engines visit and register your changes.
Thanks I think I have some good advice to work on. You have been very helpful!
You do not really need to unpublish them. You can just do the necessary amendments thru hubpages and once they are done the changes will be added to the hubs.
I'm glad I read this - Glen's comment about the save feature is a new one. Oh dear, it's like someone can see you while you're chaining your clothes!

Do you think it is better to unpublish seasonal Hubs? They won't get traffic during the year, so I'm wondering if it would be better to unpublish those until the next season. I am thinking about Christmas Hubs I have written.

Hello,I was wondering if there is a way to unpublish all of my Hubs at once, or deactivating my account. I have been on HubPages for years, but I no longer find it as rewarding or enjoyable as I used to. At the same time, I don't want to close my account because I'm proud of all of the work I've...

Does unpublishing my hubs with low value, low ranking and low traffic improve my ranking as an author in search engines and increase traffic to currently popular hubs? has anyone tried this? does the hp staff have any intell on this?

Read here that when one hubber did this, traffic improved. I thought the formerly called 'sleeping' hubs, now those not 'featured', would be pulled off Google, anyways. So I'm curious that when someone unpublished their 'sleeping' hubs that this improved traffic. Has anyone else found that doing...

Hubpages have developed a habit of keeping unpublishing my hubs for "linking to prohibited sites" - However, the particular hub in question which keeps repeatedly being unpublished does NOT contain any links whatsoever! It has been submitted, re-approved and then unpublished again...
