   Best sci-fi film ever? Which one? and Why?
   
   Do you prefer action to thought? Fantastic to somewhat plausible? Way out there or just the day after tomorrow? Special effects or character studies?

   Alien. Hands down, Segourney Weaver was perfect in that. Loved the scene where they're eating and the guy goes into convulsions, and the alien rips out his guts...squeals, and darts across the table. I think that is hands down, a perfect moment in cinema history.

   It's a toss up between Aliens and Sunshine. I loved Alien, but I think the sequel just has the edge. Ripley is forced in to facing the demons again, and again she takes full control of a male dominated environment.
   Sunshine directed by Danny Boyle is a superb piece of film making, acting, score, story. It's beautiful to watch and the character interaction has you on the edge of your seat all the way through.

   I am a star wars man. The original Trilogy anyway. My favourite is The Empire Strike Back
   
   Very hard to argue with a franchise that has millions of followers, conventions, guys doing the Boston Marathon in stormtrooper outfits. They have consistantly sold merchandise for the past 34 years. When I was a kid every boy had 20+ action figures. There are plenty of software titles out there too.
   
   I thought George lost the plot a bit with the prequel Trilogy but they did bring a new generation of young fans in. Who else wants to see Ja-Ja fed to the Sarlacc? Where his ears will be digested over a period of 10,000 years? Perhaps we could throw whingy whiney Anakin in with him.
   
   The next best Sci fi would have to be Star Trek which also has a massive following. Unfortunately I have never really got it.

   I'm not sure if it is classified as sci-fi but I love Independence Day with Will Smith and Bill Pullman.  I like it because there is a lot of action but it is also a semi-plausible scenario.
   
   No, I don't like thinking movies.  If I want to think I will read something.  I like visual things to move and keep me interested.
   
   Special effects are great if they are an integral part of the movie and not an attempt by the special effects department to show what they can to. I am not a fan of CG, because too often it is like adding a cartoon to the movie and totally unbelievable.

   Call me a classics man, but as far as film goes, I think 2001 A Space Odyssey takes the cake. I believe a true sci-fi film should look into the face of some pending discovery or concern and expound upon it with a sense of true wonder, inspiring exploration. And the scene with HAL is perfect. I agree that Alien and Star Wars are classics in their own right, each inspiring a hundred lookalikes and redefining the genre, but I still hold that 2001 is the true classic.

   I find it incredibly difficult to pick just one...so although they are totally different in tone and style I would put both the original John Carpenter's THE THING and Sigourney Weaver and the original ALIENS in the number one spot.   Avery close second would be 2001:  A Space Odyssey. 
   
   Does anyone but me remember STARMAN?   I guess that wasn't exactly traditional science fiction, more like a great romance between an alien and an earthling,but I thought it was a great film. I especially remember the music at the very end, beautiful and powerful.

All credits goes to the Director Shankar, Superstar Rajinikanth, Aishwarya rai, A.R. Rahman, Rasool pokutty and animation studio-legacy effects.
