How rare is color blindness? How many people in your family are color blind?

I ask this question because of a debate between my daughter's health teacher and herself. The teacher was explaining how rare it is, but my daughter disagreed due to how many family members are color blind. She doesn't think it is that rare, but he claimed it is. Could anyone break down how common it is? Along with why so many members (by blood, or married into the family) are color blind. Thanks!

My dad was color blind...he had grey hair and ... poor man - he really thought it was blond:) lol He went to work with mismatched socks..could not depend on him to dress himself and not look like a circus worker:) His brothers were color blind as well...I heard women can not have this so maybe it is a genetic thing?

Thanks for the feedback. That is what made this question so interesting. I bet your mom had some entertaining discussions with him on what to wear.
At the moment, I can think of two of my sister-in-laws, three brother-in-laws, my dad, my hubby (all but one of his siblings is color blind, I think...) and my daughter. I haven't heard if any of my siblings children are, but my daughter didn't get diagnosed until she was in 5th grade. I would have to sit down with a piece of paper to do the rest of the family tree. If anyone could find more information on this, I would love to read it. My daughter sure baffled her teacher by the time she was done with class. He had never met a women that was color blind, let alone so many in one family. I remember having a woman teacher that was color blind. I do know that men carry the gene more so than women. Hmm...it is very interesting indeed...

I currently have 2 friends who are color blind and have known only one other person to be color blind. I'm not sure how that compares to others but 3 people in the 23 years I've been alive is equal to the number of people I know diagnosed with bi polar disorder to put it in perspective for you.
