Is Christianity a peaceful religion? I think it is the population that believe and follow within the religion/organization that make it peaceful or warmongering.

Religion requires obedience to a moral code. Strict obedience usually produces intolerance, or distrust, towards those who don't follow the same path. Therefore, religion tends to be propelled by divisiveness and antagonism, rather than the love and moral pureness that it professes to teach.

To answer your question, Islam, and religion in general, could be a force for peace in a utopian society (although, paradoxically, a utopian society probably wouldn't need religion anyway). But it generally isn't a force for peace because mankind doesn't the possess the intellectual and emotional capacity necessary.

The majority of muslims are not terrorists or jihadists, and there are Islamic denominations that specifically preach non-violence (see Sufis), so even without looking at specific portions of dogma, one could certainly argue that the answer to your question is yes.

But, as Flickr states, the people of a given religion can interpret it in many ways, and they can define it as violently, or as nonviolently as they see fit.

Jihadists are a pretty violent group, along with most Islamic fundamentalists. Of course, if you judged Christianity based on the Spanish Inquisition, and a few of the Crusaders, and you'd have a very bloodthirsty picture too.

I would say Yes. Islam is indeed is a peaceful religion. I'm saying this because I have studied Islam. It's just a group of violent people who are using the name of Islam to create all the fuss. How many muslims are around you? And how many of them have done bad to you? Think about it. Bad people are in every religion. They take advantage of the religion and fulfill their own objectives. Just because of a bunch of violent people don't call the whole religion bad. The problem with us all is that we believe in what others tell us. Have anyone of us actually tried to read Islam our selves? I think we can only find the answer to this question when we really study Islam.

If a Christian steals, it doesn't mean Christianity teaches you how to steal.
If a Jew murders, it doesn't mean that Judaism is not a peaceful religion.
So if a group of people start killing people even Muslim people by giving it the name of Jihad, it can't ever mean that Islam is not a peaceful Religion.
If you study the concept of Jihad, it will be very clear to you that Muhammad (PBUH) never allowed to attack old people, kids and women even when it's a war situation.
There's a verse in Holy Quran which says: "When it is said to them Do not spread disorder in the land, they say: It is we who reform. Beware! (Truly) it is they who spread disorder, but they do not have any sense (of it) at all." This verse is clearly about those people who claim that they are doing jihad for the goodness but the fact is contrast to that.

Wow. Your book is full of contradictions. If a person is true to Islam they will kill unbelievers. To deny that is to deny the Koran.

    This can only be answered by reading the source of the religion, the koran. Let me give you some exerts;

Quran (2:191-193) - "And slay them wherever ye find them

Quran (2:244) - "Then fight in the cause of Allah

Quran (2:216) - "Fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not."

Quran (3:151) - "Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers,

Quran (4:89) - "They but wish that ye should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they): But take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of Allah (From what is forbidden). But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them; and (in any case) take no friends or helpers from their ranks."

And there's PLENTY more where they came from.

Yes islam is a peaceful religion.

hippy chose to use only portions from the Quran which are relavant to his/her cause... both incomplete and out of context. one example below.

    hippy writes

Quran (3:151) - "Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers,

    Full verse below...

    Quran 3:151
"We shall cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve because they ascribe unto Allah partners, for which no warrant hath been revealed. Their habitation is the Fire, and hapless the abode of the wrong-doers. (151)"

ascribing partners to the All Mighty is a big sin in islam ... even if a muslim ascribes partners with Allah he or she will go to the Fire.

One i'd like to share with you...

    Quran 5:32

"For that cause We decreed for the Children of Israel that whosoever killeth a human being for other than manslaughter or corruption in the earth, it shall be as if he had killed all mankind, and whoso saveth the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind. Our messengers came unto them of old with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty), but afterwards lo! many of them became prodigals in the earth. (32)"

I remember  once reading that Mohamed the prophet gave Muslims the instructions to the following effect : ...and you shall respect the people of the Book. The people of the book referred to Christians and Jews.Anyway the moral of the statement is that Moderate Muslims are actually very nice people who hold to the tenets of their faith.Under no circumstance is suicide mentioned as being acceptable in the Koran.

In Kenya, where i come from,Muslims and Christians have been known to intermarry and live together happily.I know several couples like that and i am related to them.

Give  Muslims a chance, you will be surprised at how much in common you have with them.

I believe Islam is a peaceful religion but there are some people called "extremists" (doing Jihad) who have taken it to a different level and sadly, it taints the other peaceful muslim people.

I studied Islam at a major university. I can tell you that Muslims have a very diverse and rich culture, but one thing that I cannot say is that Islam is a "peaceful" religion.

Muslim Sultans were known for choosing one son, out of many, who showed the most promise as an administrator. The Sultan promptly had the rest assassinated via strangulation.

I think if one followed history, one would have to conclude that Islam is a religion based equally on law and on blood.

I think if you read the Quran you would see that all non violent Muslims are considered to be poor Muslims.

You gave an example of what the people were doing but not what the religion teaches. The sultans in this case were wrong according to Islam.

"The ink of the scholar is holier than the blood of the martyr"
      - Prophet Muhammad.

Sledgehammer is right...violent Muslims are the ones that are following the Quran. That is why Islam is a threat to all humanity.

Yes Islam is a peaceful religion once we recognize that it is up to the individual to practice in a peaceful way.

    God Bless
