Why don't students respect substitute teachers anymore?

When I was in school, we showed the same respect to our substitutes as we did our regular classroom teachers.

I recently heard a story on this. The young students figure that the substitute teachers aren't going to be around for longer than a few weeks, so they feel that they can get away with more crap.

Students don't even respect their regular teachers, so why would they respect subs?  Respect went out the window years ago when parents stopped parenting and lawyers started pushing parents to sue the schools.

I was a sub teacher for 12 years and always tried to make the point that 'our' job was to follow the expectations of the regular teacher. I didn't make the rules, I followed the directions of the full-time teacher, and they were anwerable to her or him, in their behavior and accomplishments during the time I was there.

You did, really?  I was in school a long - long time ago and we treated substitutes horribly.  I have no idea why.  I think because kids know that the sub is not there for a long time - and often the sub is not really schooled in handling a large class - kids sense it and go in for the jugular.    Sad that kids behave like that but they do.

we never did. when we had a sub, it was play time. i'm almost 50 and i don't see any change on how students were then and now.

I have been subbing for a very long time.  Substitute teachers are required to have more education and more training to sub in most states.  I am a very well trained educator, certified in two states, so officially I know how to deal with student behavior.  Of course as a substitute teacher, I expect students to push the limits some and try to break rules.  I expect more talking, more getting out seats and less work getting done.   All of these are given and I deal with it accordingly...any thing I am not comfortable with, I do not do in cases that students may say "our teacher lets us....." I reply that when your teacher comes back then you can do those things, but while I am here I am not okay with that...and usually it is fine.

When I mean disrespect I mean blatant disrespect.    Kids talk back terribly, they are mean to adults and each other.  They do things right in front of you that they and I know is against the rules.  I had a student the other day playing with a toy inside his desk...yes that happens, but it was one  that made noise and I asked him multiple times to not do that...I had a student take one of the teacher's ink pens, take it apart and color an eraser with it...the entire eraser...the teacher's eraser too I suspect.  I also had a 3rd grader texting in class...a third grader in a school where it is a well known school policy that cells are not allowed in the classroom.....these are all things that show great disrespect not only for me, but for the other students (some of whom were actually listening), to the teacher and to the school in general.   I also had a student twice say that he hated me, once for not letting him pick on other students and once for me asking him to stand in line the right way without hitting others.

I'm beginning to think is not so much as just a disrespecting the sub issue and not learning respect in the first place.  I think children may not be learning to respect adults, each other or themselves any more.   And perhaps it is just this school, because I have subbed at other schools where students were very well behaved and respectful.

I'm not very religious but think I can give you an answer.
    Read 2 Timothy 3: 1- 5. You'll know the reason why.
