   How to kill a lone tick without using chemicals?
   
   You can kill a tick with chemicals, but what if you find a live one, as I did on the cover of my kitchen trash can today? Short of slicing it in half with a knife, how do you squash it? I have strong finger nails and applied one of them to the center of the tick, a couple of times. I thought it was dead, and was amazed to find that 20 minutes later it was still kicking its legs. (I'd saved it in a glass jar to show my daughter what had invaded our house.)

   Hi Sally, sorry about the tick. I threw it in that trash can two days ago wrapped in a witchazel-soaked paper towel. I can tell you now that witchazel does not kill ticks. I took your saved tick (thank you) and wrapped it in scotch tape this time. We do this at the barn with great success. Fingers crossed that he doesn't escape the trash can a second time!

   I don't know if you people are under some dunder-headed illusion that killing the tick will somehow make you more safe from future encounters with them or something, or if you just like death. I don't see why people have the need to kill them, I toss them back in the woods. And I've certainly had my share of encounters with them, that's for sure. I can guarantee you that none of them were the same ones.

   Do not touch a tick with your bare hands, and do not squeeze it as it can secrete pathogens in its body fluids! You can kill it by placing it in alcohol. Do not flush down the toilet.
