Is it possible to publish a book- mainstream- without a sparkling resume/ degree?

Hi Caroline, I am very impressed with your resume and I admire your talent and ambition. I also enjoy poetry and writing novels, although I have yet to send one through publication. I'm also exploring writing songs and screenplays (perhaps too many goals?) Compared to most writers on this site, I am a simple, uneducated hack, self-taught in every way, and I'm wondering if you had advice for me one what steps to take for success...in this area:)- (i-e. is it possible without additional schooling)? Thanks so much, be strong, and God Bless! -Daniel Austhof

Hello Daniel, My gut reaction to this question is, of course, yes, you can! Using the word 'mainstream' to define publication, however, may limit your potential (even if it's only in your mind). Big publishers have become dinosaurs, and in this new Conversation Era, self published books are gaining great strides in reputation. The number of digital books and readers is way outnumbering traditional publication routes recently.
A writer is only as good as his latest work. Falling back on educational accolades is no longer a safety net in the evolving world of publication. I personally know self published authors who started adding their books to Kindle KP and are now making four and five digit monthly incomes. I also have a good friend who is an award winning author, published by Random, Simon & Schuster, and other smaller notable publishing houses - and she isn't making a dime from them. It's all about how to market yourself.
And thanks for asking this question, because you've given me an idea for a new article series! Cheers, Michaela kennedy

Great, thanks Kii! And you're more than welcome! That's very encouraging to hear. I was beginning to feel closer to the point where I was ready to unveil some of my writing, but that I would need to backtrack and build a resume retroactively. Thanks

      Hello Daniel,

I apologize greatly for not seeing your question until now! I haven't been checking my question stats on here. First of all I am humbled by your compliments. I don't see myself as having accomplished so much (I guess we are all critical of ourselves) so your comment means a lot. As Kii Koncepts has said you can self publish and can be credible. It is all about how you market yourself and networking with others. There is a great writer on hubpages who I have met who has published many books on Amazon.com. His name on hubpages is SubRon7 and you can look at his amazon page under James Nelson. You can start by publishing with amazon. They market your book etc. Also you can set up your own writing site and network through other author sites. I myself haven't published yet and am looking for ways to do so. Good luck to you! You can do anything you set your mind to. smile
