Why is the legal age for drinking higher than the age you can enlist in the armed forces in the US?
State rights VS fed Rights. Fed said if didn't raise the age to 21 then will withdraw highway funds. Same thing for the 55mph but the speed limit extortion is not longer done. That was back in 1970's when the draft was still active and didn't have a choice to join up.
Feds VS States questions is still ongoing 2 SCOTUS decisions this year : Obamacare & AZ SB1070.
Your brain is still in a critical growth period during that time. Alcohol can be extremely negative to a person's mental health if a person over indulges, especially when a person is young.
SQ: Did you notice the guy we had a President of the USofA from 2001 to 2008???? There can be no doubt that HE indulged in some alcohol during his critical mental-health growth period!!!
P.S. He never got drafted, either!!!!!
They probably need more sober marines out there where things shouldn't go wrong as often as it does at home. Those back home and away from the war front, can occupy themselves with drink while watching TV and popping corn, as we pass vital legislative decisions. Let them wake up tomorrow to the discovery that the law was passed yesterday as they caroused. Trust politicians with your children:)
To be fair there is logic behind this. Drinking, is not beneificial to anybody, under the age of 21 or not. The forces, while disasters do occur, teaches young and old men the values of cooperation, friendship, strength, courage and leadership. How can those values be compared to getting pissed and puking over your best friends shoes?
I find this law to be a bit odd. To me, I think that if you are old enough to stand up and say that you are willing to die for your country, then you are old enough to drink. Saying that you can go fight for your country and see all of the terrible things of war but you can't go home a drink a beer is insane to me.
All I can say is that 21 years olds can be as stupid and naive as an 18 year old, whether they have a M16 or a bottle of Jim Beam in their hands! As far as army age....they like them young so they can form their minds to the way of thinking like a soldier!
