Why do you or do you not tithe?

Tithing is found in several religions and has a specific purpose but not eberyone believes in tithing.

I don't tithe at a church with just money, there is always a check with a certain area that it goes into. I make sure the purpose of the money is always written on the check. Mainly because I believe the church will use it for a new building, a fountain, equipment for the church. I want the money to go to those who need food, clothes, and shelter.

Because it is good to. God and Jesus both said to help others, that is helping others. "When I was hungry, you fed me. When I needed a place to stay, you sheltered me. When I was naked, you clothed me."

Tithing started when God had the Children of Israel give Him (God) 10 per cent of whatever they have or whatever they made a profit from. Now God did not need any of the 10%, He is God He owns everything. Remember the Scripture " the earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof, they and all that dwell therein. " God instructed the Children of Israel to give the 10% to the Priests who took care of God's temple. The Priests did not work because God instructed them to care for the temple and the people, which was hard work, considering the sacrifices that were to be performed during the many feasts that they celebrated. So this practice carried over to this day in Christianity. Yes I tithe because I was taught this by my Pastor. There are some who do not tithe and their Pastors do not require them to tithe because they believe that we are living under a New Covenant, Jesus Christ and His Grace and Mercy. Under the Old Testament, tithing was commanded, but in the New Testament, nowhere in Scripture does it say we have to tithe, but it does say we are to give liberally, and cheerfully. So I tithe because I was taught according to the Old Testament.

'but in the New Testament, nowhere in Scripture does it say we have to tithe'. It may not have used the word 'tithe' but check 2nd Corinthians 9:11 to the end, it appears to suggest that.

    This is a great question.
Tithing is not about religion.....tithing is biblical.  God has provided all things for us while we are temporarily here on earth.  And, everything we have is God's and not ours.  The scriptures say that we should tithe the first 10 % of
"all our increase" (which means all our income).  And, we are to tithe that money to the place we go to worship our Lord.  For me, that is Calvary Chapel, and I know that in our church, all the tithes from our church family are used to help any church members who are going through hardships, for the homeless, for the poor.....Calvary reaches out and serves our community with love, the way that Jesus wants us to.  We also use tithes to hold a bible study and back yard barbecue at our church every Friday afternoon, and in the summer, every Sunday evening.....both of these are outreaches to our community.

We give money to assist the preist, clergy, ministers, imams, and devotees the ability to carry on with their work of educating the masses in scriptures and maintaining the temples so we could come and worship.  God does not need our money, but we are supposed to support God's servants.

    Best wishes.

I tithe to help my church maintain basic necessities, to help the poor, to be more like my Heavenly Father and our brother Jesus Christ, and for peace of conscious among other reasons.
