Because, generally speaking, there are nerve endings exposed to the air. That stimulates them and causes pain. That is why a wound feels better once it is scabbed over and the nerve endings are no longer exposed.
Duffsmom is correct. Just like a burn, when the nerve endings are exposed to the air there is pain. The skin is your protective barrier. By occluding oxygen from the nerve endings you can get some pain relief.
