It is a statement of why you are doing the study.
For example : To study the genetic make up of the sea anemone, Anthopleura xanthogrammica, and to isolate the genes that code for the toxins Anthopleurins A and B.
(Behind it, is the very selfish motive, perhaps they will award me the Nobel for Medicine and or Physiology or Chemistry if I am able to change via genetic engineering, the antigenic sites  of the toxins and allow the toxin to be injected so that the heart could be made to beat again after it has stopped beating. Regardless of the selfish motive ...there was in it, the intent to save the lives of many who could not be revived before getting to the hospital).

Many years later, someone else reported that the antigenic sites could not be changed and still allow the toxins the inherent cardiotonic function.

A thesis statement is one sentence that captures the heart of your paper; in other words, the claim you will be defending or explaining throughout the essay.

It should be specific, clear, defensible, and controversial.  God exists and God does not exist are two examples of thesis statements.

The rest of your paper will just be defending the thesis.

A thesis statement can be many things. For advanced writers, there's even such a thing as an implied thesis statement.

But if you're asking this question, I assume you want to know the basic definition/usage: A thesis statement gives the central point of the essay/article as well as the main points you will be discussing.

For the basic 5-paragraph essay (which is a good model for inexperienced writers and people taking a writing test) the thesis statement will have the central position and three points (each of which will be developed in the three body paragraphs)

    For example:

"Writing Hubpages is a good idea because it helps you make connections with fellow writers, it increases your exposure, and it helps you to create backlinks for your website."

"Writing Hubpages is a good idea" is the point of your whole essay.

"it helps you make connections with fellow writers" will be the focus of body paragraph one.

"exposure" will be the focus of body paragraph two.

"backlinks" will be the focus of body paragraph three.

A solid thesis statement not only helps your reader know what he or she will be getting into, it also helps you, the writer, structure your writing better.
