   I, sometimes, wonder recently a Dutch team succeeded in creating a form of the H5N1 virus transmissible to the human. What for? To be used as a biological weapon, to eradicate the overgrowing worldwide population? How would we know if one day they decide to diffuse the bacteria in the air?

   Scientific research allows us to progress as a society.  Technological advancement has made our society able to easily communicate and medial research has allowed us to cure diseases that wiped out large populations in the past.  That's what I think, anyway. Great question.

   I think Scientific research and discovery can bring untold benefit and understanding to the human race and planet as a whole, or it can bring the most devastating and cruel consequences as well.
   
   It all depends on whose hands have it and what is their agenda?

   Really scientific research takes the humanity to different heights. Look at the advancement in the field of communication, education, transport, medicine and so on. Amazing! When I was young I used to visit the nearest (5 km!) library riding my bicycle; today I am sitting in front my laptop and visiting the world of knowledge in a fraction of second. We can not measure the benefits of scientific research immediately. More research more value for humanity. Thank you.

   Its good because it makes everyone's lives easier finding out about the universe is interesting. But its also making us lazy and forgetful relying to much on technology, prolonging life to much would overpopulate the world causing more problems, survival of the fittest is no longer relevant so we will have to rely on science in the future for everything.

   Science unlocks the mysteries of the universe, and gives us the understanding to use that knowledge in incredible ways. Science helps us to care for our fellow man, appreciate the world around us, and plan for the future. Science takes us to new and unexpected places - who would have thought 80 years ago that a strange quirk of quantum mechanics would lead to the development of transistors, allowing all of us to sit here hundreds or thousands of miles apart and talk about science?
