Why is this horses skin orange?

    Why is this horses skin orange?

    I've seen plenty of white horses and known them to have pink skin - but this looked really orange - I rubbed it to see if it was anti sun cream or something, but it didn't come off on my hand.

    It could be over exposure to strong sun but from what I can gather it's more likely to be some sort of liver dysfunction leading to jaundice. The only other possible cause is some kind of albino effect?
    Whatever the cause I hope there's veterinarian input if needs be! It doesn't look too well.

      I wondered about sun - but in Lancashire we've had very little this year. The horse seemed otherwise fine - grazing and alert and responsive. Thanks for your thoughts on it.

    I'm going to give another possibility: I don't think this is jaundice. It could be, and if it was my horse, I WOULD give it a liver function test, just to be sure.

    My lead guess looking at this is allergic contact dermatitis. The reason I think that is because there is also some hair loss going on...there shouldn't be THAT much bare skin on its muzzle. That could indicate all kinds of things, but is most often caused by rubbing.

    I'm guessing the poor boy is allergic to one of the plants growing in his pasture.

    I don't think it's sunburn, although light-skinned horses and horses with white on their face can sunburn surprisingly easily, because I'm not seeing flaking of the skin. Just reddening and hair loss.

    So. There's my guess, as best as I can tell without a closer examination: Allergies.

      THanks Jennifer - I would take it to the vet if it was mine, I think you're dermatitis guess is quite a sound one. I'll take another look at him next time I'm over that way.
