How do you make a child take his meds when he refuses?
My grandson will not take his meds for ADHD OCD. He is violent without them and flatly refuses to take them at all. When my daughter tries to make him take them he threatens to call the Childrens Aid on her. What can we do to get him to take them?
You don't say how old he is. If he is still young. give him 2 choices. Either take the medicine or restrict his favorite activity.
Then read a book that tells how amazing ADHD kids are. A guy named Dennis Swanberg wrote one about himself. He is a comedian. These kids really aren't attention deficit they are just focused on what they want and don't see what everyone else wants them to do. I believe many boys are labeled ADHD because they don't get enough activity. Our school started a run club before school. The club cut down on the bad behavior, gave kids a challenge and reduced the traffic jam at the start of school. My heart goes out to you. I had 3 high energy boys who turned into amazing young men.
Please tell me that ADHD kids outgrow the violent behavior. My grandson bodyslams his baby sis on the couch & is cruel to animals. But, its wierd because he doesn't even know why. He is such an amazing boy but its like he has two personalities
My nephew has the same issue. I open his tablet and stir it into his milk before he comes down for breakfast. No issue. Hope this helps.
Thank you. I will let my daughter know, maybe she hasn't tried this option yet.
Better parenting through chemicals? Not all of a ADHD/OCD child's behaviors are because of the disorder, they are usually due to family dynamic/parenting issues. Kids may refuse meds for many reasons: control, revenge, they enjoy the power rush of being unmedicated, or the med is not the right one and they do not like the side effects (that they cannot articulate). The solution is not force or trickery, but therapy.
Drs are saying there is nothing they can do. She has been trying for years to get Dyl into councelling and has been getting no help even yet. He has a lot of stress pent up and he lashes out at his siblings.
Crushing it into applesauce works, if he eats applesauce. And if the doctors are throwing their hands up, and saying they can't help, maybe you need different doctors to help you see someone who WILL help you.

I have a 10 year old with severe ADHD, he is on meds but oh my goodness the attitude that the kid has...Just wondering what some of the other parents do to discipline their kids with this disease, since it's so challenging knowing that they can't always help their behavior.
