Is there a good free screen recording software?

I would like to do some screen recording to do a tutorial and I have tried a couple of freeware applications, one of which completely froze my machine and the other one recorded half way and then crashed.  Are there any good free or inexpensive screen recording software products that work on Windows 7?

I've recorded successfully with CamStudio which is free and can be found here:
http://camstudio.org/   Long ago Camtasia released version 3 for free but I haven't been able to find it online anymore. If you can get hold of it, it is completely functional in Windows 7;  you will not be able to update it  though.

It depends on how long of a recording you plan on doing.  If you are thinking of keeping it to 5 minutes or less, then Jing (http://www.techsmith.com/jing.html) from TechSmith will do just fine.

But if you need to do something longer, then go with camstudio (http://camstudio.org/).  It is free with no time limitation on the recorded output. It saves the output in AVI format, which tends to take up a lot of space.

Seriously, if you have $300 to spare, the best screencasting software is Camtasia (http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia-gslp.html) from TechSmith.  It has all the bells and whistles you need for a well done and professional looking screencast.

I like the features of camtasia, but I don't have 300 bucks to part with for it right now smile

Ezvid was recently recommended to me but although I've had a look at the home page (http://www.ezvid.com/) I haven't had chance to give it a try.
The home page is very impressive with examples of video made with Ezvid and states that it can also be used as an editor.
It is free and is made for Windows.

Is this one of the freeware ones you have tried? If you have or do try it, it would be great to get some feedback.

Like others, I have previously had good results with Camstudio after a bit of fiddling with the settings.

It does look good, but typically there is always a catch to something free, like this one.  You have to figure out how  they make money.  If they put ads, then that is OK.  Donations is how some of the open source programs get funding.   Be cautious.

Camstudio ... quite satisfactory and most widely used in the freeware category . Also it has got lots of youtube videos showing you to use it best ... you can find it on camstudio.org
If you choose this don't forget to install the lossless codec . It helps get clear results. You'll find it in the same site.
