I would take CDs by Keith Urban, Blake Shelton and Tim McGraw. That's if you like country music. If you don't then just ignore my answer smile

    eric clapton - unplugged
queens of the stone age - songs for the deaf
r.e.m. - automatic for the people or out of time
foo fighters - one by one

I'd take a line like that choosing my drive-time tunes, good balanced rock albums

I would ditch the CD's and go for an iPod, you can get a charger with an FM transmitter that plugs into your car lighter or power outlet.  This way you can load all of you favorite music into the iPod and not have to take a bunch of CD disks.  With that said, I like REM, Mumford and Sons, Dave Matthews, Pet Shop Boys, and compilation music from the NOW hits collection, I think there are well over 40 now, they have the top hits from each year, sometimes every six months.

Definitely any of Robbie Robertson's Native American CD's he released quite a few years ago.......Fills the spirit!
"Music For Native Americans" and "Contact From The Underworld Of Red Boy."

A road trip should take you to another world when you listen to music. Sometimes I feel a soundtrack type of album is better.....

The only other CD's I would take are George Harrison or Dean Martin.......takes you to another time.......

My favorite album that I'm listening too right now that won't make you drive too fast is Beverly McClellan's Fear Nothing. She was the bald white woman on the first season of The Voice. The record is bluesy, Southern rock and I think it's amazing.

Well I think the best CD's are the ones that have music which you love. It is important specially if its a long road trip, that you take something which you will enjoy!
