Is journalism a lost art or is it making a comeback?
As a recent graduate of a University that claims to have one of the best student run newspapers in the country, I can't help but question where journalism is going. Reading the newspaper on some days makes me want to stab a fork in my eye. On others, it is very well written.
I think that journalism is both. It is a lost art that is making a come back. Some people take it seriously and it is drawing the attention of people who want to be journalists. Sadly, they are not that great at it, but they are trying. Over time, they will realize what it takes.
Journalism is so watered down these days, it's hard to find the real thing for all the garbage and wannbes out there.
"The Newroom" just concluded on HBO and they did a great job of turning the spotlight on what passes for journalism today as opposed to what it ought to be. But the field is self-regulated, so if you watch the garbage instead of panning for the gold that is sometimes still there, you are going to get more and more garbage until that is all there is.
A blog is not journalism. Commentary is not journalism. Reporting confirmable facts, absent opinion, is journalism. You have to pan for it.
