   Why would a smart person who has no communication skills become a teacher.

   Because they desire to educate others. It doesn't matter if they cannot communicate in their mind. They can still instruct. Some intelligent individuals believe students learn by reading books and power points.

   Communication is a skill that can be learned and improved through practice. The person in question would probably not have been hired unless he or she demonstrated an ability to communicate effectively.

   No matter how bright a person is, it is very difficult for him to realistically assess his own abilities.  This person may think he can do a great job of teaching, but it is only after he's been teaching for awhile that he will see it takes a lot more than smarts to be able to get information from his own brain into the brains of his students!

   I got stuck being a substitute teacher for over 20 years. "Why would someone who is highly intelligent do this?" Your right. If you are smart enough to get on at Nasa, then by all means, do so, do yourself and everyone else a favor and go there, be a rocket scientist or astronaut, please, please, do it for me. It will give me intense satisfaction to see you that happy. Teachers are absolutely miserable. The job sucks. Intelligence is a value, but you can do it on above average intelligence, degree, nte scores, and state licensure requirements which must be renewed every 5 years, meaning more college classes for you to pay for. Communication is a must. You must be a genius at mind reading and moving people artfully and effortlessly. You will have to deal with difficult children, difficult parents, other teachers, and administrators. You must have very high emotional intelligence and communication skills. You must have longsuffering patience on wheels. You must be a multi-tasker on wheels and very quick witted. You must be a highly driven high energetic person. Relatively it is not going to pay you what you want until you get your Master's Degree and it still won't. Leave it alone. Run. See how far away from Education you can get. In Christian terms, they use the word, "called." The same thing happens in secular circles. Do you have an obsession for it that is eating you up and you cannot leave it alone? If you cannot leave Education alone, then, it may be for you, and you will eventually know, there will not be a doubt in your mind. If, you can leave it alone, I am telling you, RUN!!! Get the hell away from education and do not touch it with a ten foot pole. And remember that your job is not dictated by market and demand forces, but by the counties budget requirements. They can toss you whenevery they get good and ready. It happens every year by the hundreds. If you watch the news, you will see that. These people tell you all the time how they need teachers so much and all the jobs. They told me and everyone that. They are lieing. Why, I do not know, but they are lieing, probably has to do with money into colleges and how much the professors get paid and what programs they offer. Trust me, leave education alone. Get on line and study the burn out rate, the recruitment and retention rate. Leave it alone.

      Never realised what teaching involved. Your answer gives a whole new meaning to the profession. I think it must be some kind of 'calling' as you mentioned for anyone to enter it.

   I think a lot of people look at teaching as a easy, "anyone can do it," "fall back" profession.  Being an educator is not easy.  It takes a lot of skill and knowledge to do the job correctly and to do it well.  I have seen a handful of people over the years who should have taken on a different professional path, and some of them realize it.  I think in every profession, there are people who don't have what it takes.

   Good question, if they have no communication skills then obviously they shouldn't have become a teacher. If they are very smart but a poor communicator, perhaps some sort of research position would work for them.

   Perhaps it is the only place that will have him/her; at least until his/her lack of communication skills effects his/her classroom in a significantly negative manner. Some people have gravitated to teaching because that is the only place that will have them, and they have blended in with the ambiguity of qualitive measures... By no means am I saying this is widespread, the majority of teachers are excellent; it is the system that is chaotic...
