   The internet IS censored.  Big brother has been watching, reading, and arresting people since the internet started.  Hub pages censors!  How do you think the CIA and FBI find and arrest people?  The internet is almost as bed as lame stream media.

   Who said it was free from censorship?  Google announced that the United States drastically increased the number of censorship requests during the second half of 2011.

   It is definitely censored! The only thing you can be free about is language and even then you have to do it on your own website. And if something isn't censored you have to require a certain age limitation on it. Freedom of speech? Ha!

   I don't think "everything" will become censored at any point, users won't allow that to happen. As far as being censored now, yes it is, quite heavily in some regions of the world. This can be resolved by using a proxy, VPN, bitcoin and various other methods of internet use that allow you to remain anonymous. If more people use these methods while they use the internet it will slow down censorship and let "big brother" know that people are aware of what's going on and are taking the appropriate measures to fight back.
   
   I also think the internet becomes more censored, due to the fact that the majority of the masses who log on don't know what is happening when they are active on the computer. If we educate these people and use the above methods I listed the censorship will have to decline because there will be no real information to pin on people, if it requires costly resources to catch anyone.
   
   The governments can control the internet all they want, but they can't suppress people if they are informed of the crimes that are being committed, and stand up to this and do something about it.

   Yes it is likely to get worse  Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., recently announced plans to introduce a new cybersecurity bill in November and after the Cybersecurity Act (the Senate’s version of CISPA) got axed this summer, many realized that if securing the interwebs was going to happen this year, it wouldn’t be by the way of a gridlocked Congress. Both U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Chairman Joe Lieberman urged Obama to move forward with an executive order—despite worries that without congressional review, such a policy move would likely ignore the private sector’s numerous privacy and liability concerns - how many freedoms do you think that will steal ?

   You are talking  as  though  the internet is  not censored. China has imposed  complete censorship on  the Internet. Many  Islamic  countries are imposing censorship  on the Net. Communist countries and dictatorial nations are  imposing  censorship. Democratic countries like India impose their government  control on  the  Internet by arresting the people  who  post  views against establishment in the social networking sites. Recent arrest of two  girls in Mumbai for their  innocuous Facebook comment is  an example. 
   
   Your question should be whether Internet  will be freed from  censorship. If that  is the question, my answer is  no, at least not  in  the immediate  future.

   A agree with Sara in saying that the internet is censored. We have a very large number people who beat back free speech online. Sometimes this is easily seen and other times not so. They may take the form of administrators, trolls, and argumentative or even hostile commenters and editors to name cases where it may be more easily seen.
   
   However, there are a number of entire countries that censor the internet such as China. A very small number of people in these countries get around this by using proxies I believe. As for the entire internet being censored, who knows.
   
   But the trend appears to be that anytime mass numbers of people are frightened enough about anything to ALLOW their freedoms to be stripped in the name of someone or some group "protecting" them. That is when the entire internet will be censored for every user no matter where they are.

   I really believe the internet has always been censored. If you mean free to say and display whatever you wish, this entirely depends on the websites you engage in.  Not all of them will allow a free for all with distasteful acts. The internet is an open book not only for law abiding citizens and law enforcement, but for criminals, too.  And just like television shows, you can't believe everything you see and hear.

    I don't believe that anything will ever remain free from censorship for too long.  Everyone has different morals and beliefs, so much that there are some that feel the intense need to push their beliefs on the unwilling recipient.  There is too much freedom to do anything that you want to do on the internet and there is bound to be someone (or a group of someones) that will come along and try to change that freedom a little bit.at first and then more as time goes on.
    I would give it about another 10 years for internet censorship to come about.  Some things are already being monitored over the internet but we are still allowed our freedom.  Common sense plays a big part in what is currently being censored.  if you are doing stuff on the internet that displays bad common sense most likely it will be censored out.

    There is already censorship and self censorship on the Internet. If censorship becomes more prevalent people will either find ways round it or find a different medium. Or simply get their message across in oblique ways.  The Soviet Union tried to censor things and failed because of samizdat publishers and I am sure things lik Publius will become more prevalent
