Do you think video games have an impact on your child's behavior and if so how?
Absolutely, they effect kids behavior. Ask a kid who has been playing computer games for 2 hours to do anything and you will get a fight. I have seen marriages nearly fail because of video games. Unfortunately I have seen 2 marriages fail because of world of warkraft.
As one friend says video, "games are like crack cocain for the hyperactive kid." He should know since he is one.

What about none violent video games like Mario and Sonic?
I'm no expert on video game effects but if I spend time on a computer or watching TV and then go outside I really notice a difference in my mind/perceptions.
I think it's pretty obvious that anyone spending many hours regularly in front of a computer screen let alone engaging in violent war games is going to have brain- change. It's an addiction; sustained patterns of behaviour cause chemical changes and imprints on the brain that are hard to change and erase.
When I gave up smoking I noticed that I suddenly saw things that I'd missed before because smoking that cigarette had taken my focus - the addiciton ruled. Once that behaviour stopped my behaviours changed.
No, my children recognize video games just for what they are, games. Additionally, I think it's important for people to balance their kids video game playing with other activities. My son just played a little on the XBOX and now he, my hubby and the girls are outside playing basketball which they will probably do until it's dark. Parents cannot sit their kids in front of any media games, computer or t.v. and just let them devote hours to it without being involved. As a nation a lot of parents are uninvolved. We work too much and are a bit too selfish to have kids, as a result our children raise themselves and we think it's enough to provide 3 square meals, a roof and (in some cases) state of the art games, tv's etc. Be present and raise your children we need to stop trying to play the blame game that's why people have a hard time taking personal responsibility.
They absolutely do! I didn't realize just how big of an impact a silly video game could have. When my lot became old enough to play them I could tell you who played what by their behavior after and during their playing time. My son is a nice kid, but when he plays the violent games, another side of him comes out, this only happens when he plays the games. He is easily irritated, short with his siblings and generally disagreable. The effects of playing a game ie: aggression, irritability, etc., don't last long. Once they are away from it for a couple of hours they tend to go back to their regular personality. I don't know what kind of long term affects they may have, there must be some, that's why I ban some of the games from our home.
Choosing the correct games can be highly educational. We need to be firm and not give in when they ask for games that aren't good for them. The power of the video game can be wielded for good, or for evil.
I think that extremely violent games will desensitize a kid, especially if they started playing the games at a young age and continued for years. If they are shooting people in the head and splashing blood and gore on the screen in the game, are they really disturbed when they see similar situations on the news or does it become something that they've seen before? I think that the wrong types of games will make kids lose compassion for others and that they can view real life tragedies with a bigger sense of detachment after playing these types of games on a regular basis.
Also, if the kid is at a young age where they really don't think through the consequences or cause/effect of their actions they may imitate things in the games that they should not. I think that if the kid is young enough and pliable enough that they can definitely affect the a child's behavior.

I understand everyone needs a hobby or a past time, but should our adult males be playing video games more than our kids!! I have an older brother, he doesn't have any kids, yet instead of doing something constructive he will play the game,PS3, from dusk til dawn.
