Would you confront your child's bully? Are there legal implications?
If my child was being bullied, I would confront both the parents of the bully and the school board. Bullying can cause some very serious consequences (in the bullied), such as suicide and/or suicide attempts, low self-esteem, eating disorders, drug and alcohol abuse/dependency, etc... Bullying is never OK and should be dealt with as soon as it starts. The bully and the bullied need to be talked to and shown the consequences of bullying. Prevention is always the best and first step to take.
Hi JamiJay, I agree. Prevention and education on the topic is key.
I would address issue with the school personel : teacher, principal, counselor
I would also address the issue with the childs parents.
If a child were to hit or physically harm another child, the school or the parent would be held liable for the damages. I think it should be handled the same when the damage is emotional.
I would not directly confront the child. I am not sure about leagally, but any time you address someone elses child wthout permission to do so there is a great risk of issues with the parent - regardless of whether you are right or wrong in your statements.
Thanks Windygreen, that's what I was thinking. Going through the correct channels is obviously best.
There are no legal obligations, as far as I'm aware. You're perfectly entitled to talk to a person who is doing your child harm, and ask them to stop. Of course, there would be legal implications if you threatened the bully.
It is really difficult to keep emotions in check on this one but yes you are quite right, talking with the bully without the parent's involvement would be a bad idea. Thank you for sharing.

What should be the penalty for school bullies?School bullies should be expelled from schools and placed in juvenile detention or prison. They deserve no clemency nor reeducation whatsoever. If a "child" is old enough to bully another, he/she should be criminalized.

As many of us already know since probably the dawn of time, we've had a bully in our lives somewhere @ sometime. So, why is it that we as parents and educators can't seem to stop this huge dilemma that keeps occurring in our schools?I remember while growing up that I was bullied once or twice. My...
