Papillon by Henri Charriere. It has everything a good novel should have: love, war, peace, adventure, moral dilemmas, friendship, survival, you name it it's in there, and it is written the way all stories should be written; it's an engaging read from A to Z. I would highly recommend it to anyone to read.

Do I have to choose just one? There are so many! "Slaughterhouse- Five" by Kurt Vonnegut. The first time I read a Kurt Vonnegut novel was in the 90's. He has been one of my favorite authors ever since. His style of writing is unique and powerful,  humorous and satirical. I've read all of his novels but usually only read non-fiction. Great thought provoking question.

I would have to say "For Whom the Bell Tolls" by Ernest Hemingway.  It is an excellent look into the Spanish Civil War of the 30s with a lot of adventure and a good love story.

I would have to pick "The Old Man and the Sea" by Hemngway. Yeah it's short, but the story of an old man who has to fight everything (nature, his  age, the fish, and other people's expectations ) still brings a lump to my  throat. The older I get the more this one resonates with me.

Such a hard question....but the first thing to come to mind is Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath, a novel of time and place later made into a great movie as well.

I have to add Harper Lee's only novel, "To Kill a Mockingbird." It captures a small town in the rural wrestling with racism, morality, prejudice, child-rearing, single parenting, and the importance of a father's influence. These are issues that we face today as much as then. The film adaptation, starring Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch, is as faithful to the book as any movie has been.

Oh my goodness, what an epic novel.  What really defines a favorite novel anyway?  There were so many wonderfully written masterpieces.

To me a favorite novel is one that moves me or has left some lasting effect or impression on me.

"Love In the Time of Cholera" by Gabriel García Márquez.  I've read it twice because it was a great story with a writing style that flowed from beginning to end.  The language draws in the reader and causes the reader to hope for the characters. Márquez is an excellent writer.

    Exodus by James Michener
It is a fictional account of the journey by the Jews to form the new state of Israel following World War II

I would probably say "The Great Gatsby" By F Scott Fitzgerald. It is far beyond its time and I would say he even foresees the Great Depression. The story shows how excessive materialism leads to the downfall of society which s precisely what happened during 1920's society. It's a gripping novel which can be read over and over again. I have written a few essay's on the major themes within the novella also.

My favorite 'before my time' 20th century novel is Huxley's Brave New World. My favorite 'my time' 20th century novel is Memoirs of a Geisha. It's the only fiction book I've ever read twice.
