Have you been to the Lake District in England?

We will be stopping there for a few days, and I'm looking for recommendations as to which part to stay in. We're going next week!

Hi. I know the lake district very very well, it´s stunning. Windermere is very popular with visitors as is Coniston , but not crowded with tourists at this time of year generally. My all time favourite place has to be Dungeon Ghyll in great Langdale though. There are a few hotels dotted around that area but when I went there I used the national trust campsite, except for one special birthday when my husband booked us a hotel. There aren´t many shops and other things to keep you entertained in that area though, which may or may not be a draw back for you, depends what you like to do really.
Have a fantastic time but remember your warm and waterproof clothing, it didn´t get all those lakes for nothing, but it doesn´t rain all the time either and you may just be lucky with some warm spring days. smile

I love the words "not crowded with tourists". I used to live in North Wales and am over the tourists (though I am one now myself). Thank you for your input, friend!

Plenty of accommodation at Ambleside - large variety from humble B@B to luxury hotels. Our favourite is the Punchbowl at Crosthwaite. More information -

I live nearby and know it well. Where to stay and what to do depends on what you are interested in doing. The major towns/villages are:

Kendal - gateway to Lakes. The most town-like of all of them. Good for shopping & Kendal Mint Cake of course. Nice little ruined castle which you can walk up to in a few minutes from the town.

Windermere/Bowness-on-Windermere - Effectively 2 towns, Bowness is small, quaint and touristy, situated right next to the Lake. About a mile up the hill is the slightly bigger town of Windermere with more of the standard and larger shops. Lake Windermere boat cruises leave from the shoreline at Bowness.

Ambleside - About 10-15 minutes drive from Windermere, Ambleside is probably the busiest and most touristy of the Lake District towns, but still very nice. Ambleside also by Lake Windermere, you can take boat trips and also hire boats from the shore.

Grasmere - A small village on Rydal Water. The two highlights are Dove Cottage, William Wordsworth's cottage (which is a really great place to visit even if you aren't a poetry fan), and the Grasmere Gingerbread Shop, housed in the tiny old schoolhouse. It makes the nicest gingerbread ever, made to the same secret recipe for about 200 years!

Keswick - Another quite big town, this one further north than the others. On the shores of Derwentwater. Lots of nice shops, B&B's & places to eat, along with a few eclectic but fun mueseums (Cars with the Stars & the Cumberland Pencil Museum).

Hawkshead - Nice little small town just across the lake from Windermere (easiest way to get to it is from Windermere by ferry - there's a passenger & a car ferry). Beatrix Potter's home, Hilltop is near Hawkshead and well worth a visit, as is Beatrix Potter World in Bowness.

If walking's your thing, take your pick from the big fells - Scafell Pike, Helvelyen, Coniston Old Man, Skiddaw...

Thank you so much for the in-depth response! I will certainly look at all of those. We'll probably stick to more natury things, and castles too, as my boyfriend has yet to experience them!

Those towns already listed are all well worth a visit as are some of the boat trips on the lakes, but If you are feeling really adventurous you could try one of the famous Wainwright walks. This will get you right up in the hills and many allow stunning views of the lakes, though they are not lakes. There is only one lake in the Lake District, so here's something to do. Find out which one and what the others are called.
