What movie series do you feel most failed to live up to its hype?
Whether it was the Star Wars series, the Twilight films, the LOTR saga, the Rocky movies, the Toy Story franchise or something else: when it comes to movie series, which one disappointed you the most by its failure to be as good as the hype surrounding it?
My personal choice is the Hangover films, but I want to hear your opinion! Thanks.
The Twilight films. I really enjoyed the books and was excited to see these characters come to live on film. But I thought the movies - for the most part - were terrible. If one hadn't read the books, most of what they did portray would not make sense. I think they could have been done so much better.
duffsmom, I've heard several people say that. I'm personally on the other side of the Twilight thing; I liked the films but wasn't impressed at all by the books. Thanks for contributing your answer though, much appreciated!
I loved the Twilight movies... I think they did the books justice. And Stephenie Meyer did take part in the making of each movie...
True blood tv show looks interesting and no ordinary. I would love to live it.
Sorry, but Twilight is the worst movie I have ever seen. Honestly speaking, I love supernatural movies, but this one is extremely lame, boring and full of "talented actors". I still regret paying for it and watching it.
Jack Reacher. Tom Cruise was a horrific choice for Reacher. The millions and millions of book fans were ready to make JR one of the biggest film hits of all time, until it was announced that Cruise had been given the eponymous role.
It's a testament to the book franchise that the film made as much as it did. It succeeds despite the wooden, uncertain performance of the lead actor.
Agreed. Anyone would have been better than Cruise.
I had not read the Jack Reacher books before seeing the movie and I still felt that Cruise was mediocre at best. I was confused by the character development, in that there really wasn't much of it. The movie was not worth the hype.
Probably the Star Wars movies, more specifically the second and more recent trilogy. Sorry, but George Lucas had some continuity problems and I think he's been trying to milk the story too long. It's just gotten way too hokey. And of course we have YET ANOTHER Star Wars movie coming out! I think it's going to be a miracle if it's at all worth watching.
The Twilight junk! Just awful! Yes the Star Wars prequels were bad, but Twilight steals the trophy, they could be considered the worst movie series of all time!
The Star Wars movies that came out in the last 10 years or so. It's not so much that they failed to live up to their hype, they were just bloody flippin' godawful movies that only got made because George Lucas has more money than sense or good taste.
What an embarrassment, especially when you consider how awesome the original Star Wars trilogy was. I wonder if the scripts for the latest movies were written by George Lucas' neck wattle?
I'm Still Here, Joaquin Phoenix's heavily promoted publicity stunt. The shenanigans he pulled were more infamous than the final product. He spent two years trying to convince the public that he went mad, and might have caused long term damage to his career.
The final showing, which took me over a year to be able to watch, was nothing spectacular and just seemed like a barrage of vulgarities. Ultimately it was a great statement for him to make and I applaud him taking the risk, I just wouldn't really recommend the documentary itself.
The Hangover films are a great example of this! We didn't see the first one in theaters, so by the time the DVD came out it had been so hyped up that my husband and I just bought the DVD. What a horrible mistake!! I ended up giving it away to someone who had hyped it up to us.
The only other movie I can think of in recent years that was like this was Bridesmaids. Everyone said it was so funny that we rented it when it came out on DVD. Sure the food poisoning scene was funny, but the rest of it was just blah for us. I thought the acting was painful in most parts and they tried to stretch it out with uncomfortable silences after what I suppose they thought was a funny part. It was like a live comedian waiting for a laugh after a punch line. I felt like the jokes were forced and really overthought. Out of all of them I liked Melissa McCarthy the best, but even she didn't get me to really enjoy the movie. Very disappointing!
To me it has to be the two ill-fated Incredible Hulk movies. The first was an atrocious package of miscasting while the second attempt features a better choice in Edward Norton but a poorly executed script that had no heart or drive to it. The fact that The Avengers is by far the most popular movie with the Hulk in it pretty much says it all to me.
Movies like all forms of entertainment are vastly personal. Not everyone has the same type of humor so obviously not everyone will like every franchise.
I just saw Hangover 3 and while I think it will never top the glory of the first movie, it definitely did what the second one should have. To me there are very few sequels that will ever top the original.
Now I can say I've only had the stomach to see one Twilight film and that was because my friends and I had the opportunity to see it free at the Student Union in college. It was the second one and boy was it bad. Most people went there for free laughs and to make fun of the acting but the few stans of the audience got huffy when everyone else would lampoon the scenes. Personally, it's not my cup of tea but I never understood the hype.
I think I enjoy animated sequels the best Madagascar 2 was awesome and I loved Toy Story 2, haven't yet seen three. But out of respect to my childhood I refuse to watch any Lion King or Cinderella sequels- that's blasphemy ,

Why has Hollywood failed to turn classic Anime series into successful movies? From Dragon Ball to The Last Airbender, the normally reliable folks in Hollywood have consistently failed to properly adapt classic Anime series from Japan into viable movies. Why is that?

According to MSN, George Lucas was emotionally hurt by various fans and critics who bashed his "Star Wars" prequels, and said that he felt somewhat betrayed by them; hence he's never going to make another "Star Wars" film again. Who's to blame here? George Lucas for...

Will the Fifty Shades of Grey movie live up to the hype?I have read the books, and seen the preview of the film, but I wonder will the movie live up to the hype. Very few movies ever do... With the exception of a few good movies. So what do you think will the movie be worth it?
