What is the worst smell that you have ever had the pleasure of experiencing?
And, if you want, share how it made you feel.
I think there are way too many absolutely disgusting smells that can make you vomit, on which you can choke and die. The reason we are so sensitive to smell versus anything any other sensory signals is that the olfactory signals go straight to your brain. I don't know how to explain this, but you can look up this info.
I used to detest chloride (highly concentrated) that was used in Russian "toilets" - this smell was not only aggressive on your nose, but you'll experience the "cutting" pain in your eyes, as if you are losing your eyesight, something you really need being in those "toilet rooms". Consider yourself lucky you've never seen them.
Fish smell, wound smell, corpse... Chemical smells, rotten eggs. Strong perfume that causes immediate headache.
Besides, if you have migraines, even non-offensive smells can make you vomit as well, which is especially painful if you did not eat anything.
But, honestly, I don't keep track of the offensive smells.
I'd rather smell coffee right out the jar and lilacs.
I have experienced migraines, so I know exactly what you are talking about. I have also smelled rotting wounds, and it is enough to fill up a house with a nauseating smell. I agree, I would rather smell something nice like that! lol
Now that someone mentioned rotting garbage - Toronto City Workers went on strike in the middle of July (the hottest month) and they just did not pick up garbage or some stuff was just piling in one of the parks downtown. That was uncalled for!!!
There are many that come to mind and made me want to hurl. The worst for me is probably decaying flesh (animal-haven't experienced human) but it is the most pungent, lingering, horrid smell. Unforgettable.
I've worked at a few hospitals, so I know this smell well. Agreed.
Yes, a person had lymphatic problems in the lower legs, everything was weeping and sloughing, going rotten, swollen, the size of tree trunks, ugly. The smell made me almost reach!
Oh gosh, so many to choose from! But the one that made me most sick is the smell of fresh tar. But then again I am allergic to tar, so I'm sure this had something to do with my reaction.
See, I like the smell of fresh tar. That's interesting. I'm sure some people, without allergies to it, don't like it either.
A dead body laying in a warm apartment for days and a pork Processing plant near where I lived.
Wow! I can imagine enough to actually gag.
Many summers ago a groundhog died underneath the tool shed in our backyard, and obviously we didn't know about it till he'd been fermenting under there for a while and started to stink up the yard.
My Dad and I had to go into the shed and start pulling up the plywood floor boards to find the late Mr. Groundhog, and when we finally uncovered him in all of his maggot infested glory, we both had to run outside and lose our lunch.
A two-day old bout of diarreah left in a bar toilet that had no air circulation.
OMG! Yep, I could imagine that would be my top to if I had smelled that. *gag*
Here's a quick list :
1. Bloated old dead sheep left lying around in the hills, stumbled across on a summer's walk.
2. Festering wound on a maggotty stray cat which I rescued and had put to sleep pronto by a vet.
3. Unemptied food scrap bin from a closed restaurant, summer's night walking home to heotel (on a romantic holiday.)
4. Old Limberger cheese - a dutch speciality. We bought some to eat on a picnic but had to throw it into the woods as soon as we opened the sealed pack. Slimy, yellowing stink laden mass of pong.
Dead bodies. I had to visit a morgue as punishment for a DUI offense. It is definitely a uniquely unpleasant and unmistakable stench.
Interesting punishment - and memorable to say the least. I think that is a great way to convert people from drinking while driving...make them face the unpleasant stench of death. Thanks for sharing.
Skunk smell. I am hypersensetive to smells. I can be very hungry start cooking and by the end I'm so nauseated I can't eat.
I looked it up - I think being hypersensitive to smells is called hyperosmia. I know that if I go into a fish restaurant my appetite disappears immediately, so I kind of have an idea of what you mean.
Sour milk is one very foul smell I don't wish to encounter!!

Have you ever experienced an extraordinary sense of equanimity? This week, Kati and I each wrote on equanimity and told our story of experiencing the bliss under unlikely circumstances. It made two unique hubs on one subject and was quite fun to do together. They are behind the blue feather.

I hate one song so much I have to honor it with a mention. I don't know who "sings/raps" it, but it goes, "New Kids on the Block had a bunch of hits... Chinese food makes me sick.."What song makes you sick?
