'Loose' weight versus 'lose' weight
I wrote an article (on another blog) about losing weight, and I am amazed to see the number of comments that talk about 'loose weight' instead of 'lose weight'.
I am starting to wonder if there are so many people misspelling 'lose' that it is starting to become the acceptable way to spell it. Like an epidemic!
'loose' means "release - loosen - untie - unfasten - unbind - undo"
'Lose' means "miss - waste"
'Loose weight' would be defined as weight that is not firmly or tightly fixed in place, as if it is detached from the body.
Are you concerned about our language?
Stuff like that drives me insane... not just "loose" vs. "lose" but the constant misuse of "Its" and "it's," or "there," "their" and "they're"...sometimes I wonder if anybody paid attention in English Composition 101??
They don't teach English in school anymore...they just teach "important" stuff like tolerance for everything, sex ed, and how to vote democrat... :-P
My friend had commented that her kids had not learned how to read longhand in school, which shocked me. While I do think tolerance is important, I also think communication is important.
Just now, while scanning the "Questions" here on HP, someone asked "Is everyone enjoying they're summer?" ... I wanted to scream!!!
LOL, FatFreddysCat! I see a lot of bad English in the Answers section here on HP. Most of those authors also have low profile scores too. It would be interesting to see if their hubs are featured.
It really is an epidemic. I don't even read the comments anymore on places lilke CNN.com because of the horrible treatment of the language. I know I'm not perfect, but some of these people couldn't even be described as functionally literate if only their writing is used as an example.
My least favorite examples are "to," "too," and "two," as well as "your" and "you're." I see those as often as Mr Cat's "there" and "their." I also dislike when a multiple is designated with an apostrophe plus "s," like "banana's" and "nut's."
There ice cream had banana's and nut's to.
Oh, the horror.
Good examples. I don't claim to be perfect either, but there are just some things that people should know. It's hard to take people seriously when they talk about 'there' beliefs.
Drives me nuts and if I ever make that mistake because I was in a hurry, I hope someone here lets me know.
Another one I see all the time is WORSE and WORST - they are not interchangeable people! "I feel worst than he does." NO NO NO NO.
Yes, I am concerned as well. Since my profession is in the nutrition and fitness realm, I see this particular use of "lose" spelled incorrectly as "loose" all the time. After a while, I really thought I may be wrong personally and had to look the word up in the dictionary. LOL.
I am amazed at how many publishers allow misspelled words in their final publications. Mistakes do happen, but it's annoying to see the same consistent misspellings - especially with to, too, and two -OR- its and it's... as well as lose and loose.
I think much of our language issues have to do with technology. Many are texting and abbreviating words. They have become so accustomed to this that they have forgotten correct English unfortunately. I know when I text or email my kids, they respond with, "Why don't you abbreviate? You don't have to spell everything out." LOL.
That is so true. Today, I saw someone abbreviate 'according' with Ac. And, I realized that I had seen that before but, of course, I thought it was a mistake. Also, in my town, I saw a weight loss clinic put up a sign that said 'Loose Weight Now!'
That's AWFUL with the weight loss clinic! LOL.

Now, I have recently joined this community and I must say some of the articles I've read were wrought with grammatical errors or a strange juxtaposition of word choices. Now, let me make myself clear: I do not think that those hubs that were laden with valuable information were useless or bad...
