    Because a "Blue Moon" is a rare event. I think a blue moon happens every 2-3 years.

    A "blue moon" is when the cycle of the moon reaches the full moon phase twice in a single month, such as August, rather than in 4 weeks or 30 days.  They are very uncommon.  That is why.

    A "Blue Moon"
    " is the second of two full moons in one monthly lunar cycle.  About 1-3 occur each calendar year.

    Because Blue Moons are very rare events - the original definition is the THIRD full moon of four in a season. A season will have three months and generally, three full moons. Rarely, there will be a fourth, and in that case, the 3rd is called the blue moon.

    Now, why the 4th isn't called the Blue Moon is beyond me!

    The last Blue Moon was in August 2013. The next will be in 2016.

    If you go by the more current definition, that the second full moon in a month is a Blue Moon, then that will happen in 2015. This is less rare than the original definition.
