What are the 5 ways we have taken we are our brother's keepers too far in American society?
America is becoming more of a socialist country with each passing moment. We were once a country where all able bodied people pulled THEIR weight and did not expect another person to carry them. People are working and having their tax monies go to those who oftentimes refuse to pull their weight, expecting others to support them. There is multi-generational welfare and Obamacare, what's next? There are those misguided people who emphasize more equitable income distribution. No one should have to support and take care off an able-bodied adult.
I'm not sure if America is becoming more socialist or not. Government has never been run like a "for profit" business.
Neither side suggests doing away taxes altogether. We fight over (how) our money is spent. If we really thought everyone should be left to their own devices there would be no social security, unemployment, Medicare, welfare/food stamp programs, planned parenthood, public schools, or various government subsidized programs. There would be no "tax deductions or breaks" for donating to charities.
The truth about welfare is the vast majority of people dependent on welfare are (children). None of which had any say regarding their parent's "choices" or lack of responsibility. Until we can come up with a way to help these children without somehow benefiting the adults it's really a waste of time and energy to fight over it unless we are ready to throw those kids under the bus. This hardly seems like the "Christian" thing to do.
Our only other option would be to create a "National Adoption Agency" where we take kids away from poor, uneducated, and unmotivated parents. Now that would be the ultimate socialist (nightmare) movement.
Whether the country spends (trillions of dollars) on wars under the guise of hidden weapons of mass destruction or if it spends it on social programs the money is going to be spent. A "superpower" is judged by the living standards of it's citizens. I don't have the answer as to whether it's bad for the government to bail out or help the less fortunate the way it does for big business. I suspect no matter what, there will always be the haves and have nots. Most of us are just trying to stay ahead of the game by not having to rely on government help.
You've said some sensible things. I don't advocate immediate cessation of things like food stamps (as you said many children depend on them), but rather a steady transition from forced contribution to charitable giving and more strict standards.
Caleb, in THIS instance we are in TOTAL agreement. This society has to make a gradual transition to more charitable giving and more strict standards regarding welfare programs. Also this society must institute work programs for those on public aid.
A sense of entitlement is not limited to the poor, but even to the middle class and very wealthy. It's an attitude that isn't determined by economic class.
I do believe in paying it forward. If Americans don't care for each other, who will? It's the same in the Philippines. And we are all, after all becoming a smaller world with the internet. Things are changing, and we (the whole world) have to ride the wave.

When there was very little or no welfare programs in America, people learned to be self-sufficient. They believed that if they wanted better, they worked & sacrificed. In essence, they depended upon themselves. They didn't expect handouts from the government. Then in the...
