If your family has a history of diabetes should you eat a diabetic diet to prevent the disease?

Would eating as if you were diabetic help to prevent getting diabetes? There are many diet plans and recipes suggested for diabetics from doctors and the American Diabetic Association. What do you think?

Good question. Do one or both of your parents have diabetes?

There are a variety of factors that influence diabetes. There are two types, as you most likely know, type 1 and type 2. I'll post a fairly short answer. Genetics and environment influence diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is caused by an autoimmune attack on the pancreas, resulting in inability to produce insulin. Type 2 diabetes is where the body either does not make enough insulin, or it does make enough but the body is unable to use it. This is where insulin resistance occurs. The glucose in your blood stream simply does not respond to your own insulin. Type 1 and type 2 diabetes are dependent upon the genetic predisposition (whether your parents have the disease, either one or both of them), as well as environmental factors such as diet and exercise. For type 1 diabetes, both parents must have the disease for it to be inherited, in most cases. I could go on for days about this disease, it's physiology, etc.

However, to answer your question, yes you could follow the recommended diet. The best thing to do, though, is exercise daily (at least 45 min to an hour), eat tons of veggies, chicken, fish, various nuts, oats, and fruit. So many people with diabetes could be cured early on, simply by exercising and eating properly. Sugar intake is the one thing you need to strongly mediate throughout the day (as everyone should). High sugar, without exercise, will increase fat storage. The higher the body fat percentage, the greater a person's risk for diabetes becomes.

You must not have Type 1 diabetes currently, since the title of your post suggests you have not personally been diagnosed with the disease. So, you are in good shape statistically now, as long as you exercise daily and eat properly. If you start to become fat, you are increasing the probability of the onset of Type 2 diabetes.

Let me make it clear, though, that you will not simply get Type 2 diabetes from eating poorly and becoming obese. The genetic factor must be present as well.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! Let me know if any of this was confusing or unclear.

I think you shouldn't ask the question here. I'm not being rude. I just believe that your doctor, especially if we are talking about a family doctor, is the person to give you the right answers. He or she no doubt knows your medical history so far and if you are determined to go on a diet to avoid diabetes he or she will give you the best advice. If they advise exercise or something else instead of or with a diet all the better.

Good point. However, I realized after i made my post, he may not have posted this for himself, but rather as a general topic of discussion.

You may be right Mattingly. I just reckon that it can be dangerous to take health advice from people outside the medical profession.

I completely agree. I only gave advice on this topic because I have a bachelor's in Cellular Biology and I'm almost finished with Neurobiology as well, thus it is a very elementary topic to me.

Thank you Ron Marsden for your comment. I'm not asking this personally; I was asking for those who are afraid to, or who are wondering, and for overall general knowledge. Doctors are always the best answer for each individual case. Thanks.

I don't know what best treatments are proper to give for diabetes for sure. But, in Indonesia, there are so many traditional medicine provided by our nature (the herbal one) sold by various sources. For further information, you can type "Obat penyakit diabetes" in your searc engine, then, all information that you find, translate them into English...!

Cinnamon, chromium, and B vitamins are typically the natural treatments, along with exercise.
