What are your thoughts on people who cannot stop talking for more than a few seconds at a time?

Do you know someone that acts like they have to fill any silence with chatter, they have monologues instead of dialogues, they even think out loud and constantly talk to themselves?  What do you think when you spend time with a person with these behaviors? I hope I'm wrong about this, but it always makes me wonder if the constant chatter is because they are uncomfortable with silence, and if so what is it about the silence that makes you feel ill at ease? I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum so I'm curious about this.  There is nothing "wrong" with it per se, it just makes me wonder.

Good point Vega.  What on your thoughts on why they need to talk so much? I'm so opposite that I can't wrap my head around what it would be like to feel the need to verbalize your every thought, I don't even want to hear my own voice that much LOL.

Good question. I have a dear friend that does this and I have often wondered why she goes off on long, long twisted stories without hardly catching her breath. However, she's a good person and quite a happy person that makes people around her happy, too, so it is easy to accept. I think if she was a Debbie Downer it might be a different matter.  But I understand why you wonder about it; I can't imagine talking non-stop like this. I like my quiet moments to think! lol

Thanks for commenting Beth.  I agree it is easier to accept when a cheerful person talks non-stop.  I just wonder why it is they do what they do? Not judging just curious.

A close family member recently started to date a man who chatters non-stop. I say "chatters" because that's what it is. He'll interrupt a conversation with something that has nothing to do with the topic at hand and, whenever there's silence - even when others are watching a movie, the news, etc. he fills the room up with inane talk. It's getting on all of our nerves.

At first, we wrote this behavior off to being nervous around new people but now, a few months in, we realize this is normal with this man. We have no idea why he does it and, sadly, most of us are fed up enough with it that we avoid being around him even though we love our family member and want her to be happy.

MJ it sounds like you're in a difficult position.  He would annoy me too.

Maria...There are any number of reasons to speculate might be in play when it comes to our chatty, gabby, long-winded friends and associates.  I can be a talker under particular circumstances with certain individuals or groups.  However, I am also infamous for being the largely silent "listener"
Many variables dictate when and how much people will talk non-stop.   I have been in situations where I fully appreciate someone enjoying chit-chat and expanding on a topic.....because i'm interested in listening and less of a need to talk.
I suppose it's safe to say that our "mood" may enter into this.  Perhaps at times the chatty-Cathy is too much for us to tolerate and can be annoying.  In this case, it may be wise to politely escape from the situation.
Because I enjoy people in smaller groups and appreciate ideas and opinions being exchanged, I think I've conditioned myself to be comfortable to a vast assortment of people.....non-stop talkers, the listeners, the man of few words and even the argumentative.
All civil communication is valuable and informational.  My love of knowledge and the diversity of human beings, leads me to enjoy conversation.
To be fair and honest.  I can sometimes have a series of days on end I will spend alone and in quiet contemplation.
